What Is Astronomy?
Astronomy is the study of everything in the universe outside of Earth’s atmosphere. In other words, it’s the study of space! Astronomers study planets, stars, and all the mysteries you can’t see with the naked eye. From faraway galaxies to tiny particles of dark matter, astronomy helps us understand life on Earth just a bit better.
So, what are the biggest ideas in astronomy? Astronomers and space enthusiasts have endless questions about the universe—their curiosity is endless! Here are some of the biggest ideas the study of astronomy tackles:
- The patterns in the sky. Constellations may change locations, but they never change shape. Some astronomers study these patterns of stars and their scientific and mythological significance.
- The distances between objects. Distance in time and space can be elusive. Astronomy serves as a way to shorten the relative distance by locating the nearest stars, planets, and constellations.
- Everything in space moves at the same time. The Earth is always spinning, and so is the Sun and the galaxy!
- Gravity keeps the universe connected. Everything in the universe is held together by gravity. There’s even gravity in space!
