James Charles identifies as gay. He came out to his parents at the age of 12, although he has never shared his coming out story in depth. While Charles loves wearing makeup, doing his nails, and looking as fabulous as possible, he has confirmed he’s not transgender or nonbinary. He said, “I’m confident in myself and my gender identity—[I’m] happy being a boy. But at the same time, I love makeup I have a full set of nails on all the time.”
It’s understandable that there is some confusion regarding James Charles and his sexuality, though. He very famously (and controversially) said he wasn’t “full gay” because he’d been attracted to transmen and women before. However, transmen are men, and having been attracted to women in the past doesn’t mean someone isn’t gay now (if that’s how they identify). Charles also muddied the water further by trying to “jokingly” come out as straight on his YouTube channel, possibly in an attempt to go viral again. That said, Charles has been unabashedly clear that he fully identifies as gay.
