What Makes Someone “Hot”?
When you think about what makes somebody “hot,” a list of specific beauty standards (like facial symmetry, clear skin, bone structure, physical fitness, etc) likely comes to mind. Although it is true that there are societal pressures to meet these types of standards, “hotness” is actually much more complicated than this. At the end of the day, “hot” is subjective, and it means entirely different things to different people. [1] X Research source This is a good thing—it means that hotness really is in the eye of the beholder, and that everyone is hot in their own unique way!
Non-physical traits, like personality, confidence, and sense of humor, all play a major role as well. Here are some examples of hot qualities that have nothing to do with physical appearance:
- Authenticity: When someone is honest and true to themselves, they come across as more attractive to others. In fact, research even shows that people are perceived as more appealing when they’re telling the truth, versus when they’re lying. [2] X Research source In other words, when you’re being your authentic self, you’re more likely to come across as “hot” to the people around you.
- Confidence: A confident energy often reads as “hot” to others because it suggests that you’re self-assured and selective about who you’ll choose to give your time to, as opposed to desperate for attention. This signals high desirability in general, which in turn increases your “hotness” levels. [3] X Research source
- Kindness & character: Studies show that positive character traits (such as kindness, decency, respect, etc) make you more physically attractive to others, while negative character traits (dishonesty, meanness, etc) can make you less physically attractive to others. - Sense of humor: When it comes to hotness, the ability to make someone laugh can go a long way. According to research, funny people tend to be perceived as more creative, flexible thinkers, which in turn makes them more attractive and desirable to potential partners. [5] X Research source
- Similarity: Research shows that people tend to be attracted to people they perceive as similar to them.
