With the arrival of the 1.16 Nether Update, many new and useful features were added to Minecraft. One of them was a new mob, piglins, which are a neutral mob that lives in the nether. In addition to adding life to the nether, you can also barter with piglins using gold ingots to get a variety of useful and rare items. Getting all the items you need to barter and get to the nether can be tricky, but by learning how to get all the items necessary and how to actually barter, the process becomes easier.
Steps
Part 1
Part 1 of 3:
Getting Gold
-
Make a crafting table . Find and break a tree until you have at least 1 wood log. Open your inventory and place the log in any space in the 2x2 crafting space at the top right corner. Turn the log into wooden planks, then fill all 4 spaces in the crafting space with a wooden plank. This will make a crafting table.
-
Make a pickaxe . To make a pickaxe you will need 3 iron ingots and 2 sticks. You can craft sticks by placing 2 wooden planks on top of each other in a crafting space. Iron ingots can be obtained by mining for iron ore at Y-levels 0-63 and then smelting iron ore [1] X Research source . Open a crafting table and place 2 sticks at the bottom and middle of the middle column, then place the iron ingots in the 3 spaces in the top row.Advertisement
-
3Find and mine gold ore. Gold ore can be found by mining from Y-levels 32 to 0. In badlands biomes, gold ore can be found at Y-levels 79 to 32. [2] X Research source To mine gold ore, just hold the button you use to break blocks, or press and hold on the gold ore.
-
Make a furnace . Gather 8 pieces of cobblestone by mining 8 stone blocks. Open a crafting table and place the cobblestone blocks in every outside space, leaving the middle empty.
-
5Smelt the gold ore . Open the furnace and place fuel like coal or wood in the bottom slot. Then place gold ore in the top slot. The furnace should light up and begin to smelt the ore. Wait for a bit and a gold ingot should pop out in the slot on the right of the interface.Advertisement

Part 2 of 3:
Making a Nether Portal
-
Obtain 10 obsidian blocks. Obsidian blocks form when water meets lava. They can be mined using a diamond or netherite pickaxe. It can also be obtained by looting chests in bastions, nether fortresses, villages, and ruined portals [3] X Research source .
-
2Make a flint and steel . To make a flint and steel you'll need an iron ingot and a piece of flint. Flint can be obtained by breaking gravel blocks. Iron ingots can be obtained by smelting iron ore, which is found from Y-levels 0 to 63. Once you have these, open a crafting table and place the flint and iron ingot anywhere in the crafting table.
- Flint and steels may also be found in chests in ruined portals and nether fortresses. [4] X Research source
-
Build the portal frame . Find where you want to place your nether portal and place 2 obsidian blocks next to each other horizontally. Then, place a non-obsidian block at the end of each piece of obsidian. Place 3 obsidian blocks on top of each non-obsidian block at the bottom. Then, place a non-obsidian block on top of the third pieces of obsidian at the top. Place the remaining 2 obsidian blocks across the top. [5] X Research source
-
Light the portal using the flint and steel. Hold the flint and steel in your hand and use it to light one of the bottom 2 obsidian blocks on fire. This should create a swirling, purple portal inside of the obsidian.Advertisement

Part 3 of 3:
Bartering with Piglins
-
1Craft golden armor. Crafting and wearing gold armor will prevent piglins from attacking you. [6] X Research source Gold armor is crafted the same as any other armor type, except using gold ingots.
- Any piece of armor works at stopping piglins, but gold boots are the most effective as they use the least amount of gold and provide the least amount of protection in all cases. To make gold boots, open a crafting table and place 2 gold ingots on top of each other on the left side, then do the same on the right side.
- Gold ingots can be obtained be smelting gold ore, which is found at Y-levels 32 to 0.
-
2Find a piglin. Piglins will spawn in the Nether in nether wastes, crimson forests, and bastions. In Java Edition, they will spawn on blocks at a light level of 11 or less. On Bedrock Edition, they will spawn on blocks at a light level of 7 or less. [7] X Research source
- Baby piglins cannot be bartered with, so only look for adult piglins.
-
3Throw a gold ingot on the ground near the piglin. Hold a gold ingot in your hand and throw it on the ground near the piglin. The piglin should pick it up and examine it for a few moments. [8] X Research source
- Piglins will also examine gold ingots that are dropped from dispensers or droppers, allowing the bartering process to be automated.
-
4Wait for the piglin to drop an item. After examining the ingot for a few seconds, the piglin will drop an item randomly selected from their bartering chart. Some items have a higher or lower chance of being selected than others. The items a piglin can give are: [9] X Research source
- Enchanted soul speed books
- Iron boots with soul speed
- Potions or splash potions of fire resistance
- Water bottles
- Iron ingots
- Enderpearls
- String
- Nether quartz
- Obsidian or crying obsidian
- Fire charge
