Height Statistics You Didn't Know
People come in all shapes and sizes. Some are tall, some short, some in the middle. There’s no “best” way to be, and no matter your height, you probably have unique advantages because of it—and disadvantages, but hey, nobody’s perfect, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. To that end, let’s look at some interesting stats and trivia about humankind’s height around the world:
- Globally, the average height of women is about 159 cm (5.22 ft).
- Compare that to the average global height of men, which is about 171 cm (5.61 ft).
- For a long time, like almost all of recorded history, people were only about 168–172 cm (5.51–5.64 ft) tall. Then, around 1700, humankind had a growth spurt, and the average height sprouted up by about 10 cm (3.9 in). This is probably thanks to advances in healthcare and nutrition.
- Recently, however, the average human height has fallen by about 0.1%, which doesn’t seem like much until you consider that that’s only in the last 100 years. Experts theorize that this is because of worsening nutrition and material conditions around the world.
- The Netherlands has some of the tallest people in the world, with the average male height hanging around 182.54 cm (5.989 ft).
- Afghanistan has some of the shortest averages, with the average male height being 161.4 cm (5.30 ft).
- Height is a genetic trait, meaning it’s passed down through your genes. How tall your parents are will likely affect how tall you are.
- Many researchers and experts use historical height data to also measure general human well-being since the two qualities are linked in many ways. That doesn’t mean that short people are less healthy, just that in general, populations that are taller than average tend to have better well-being.
- Of course, that’s not a perfect comparison. Plenty of societies that are shorter than the global average also boast high qualities of well-being. It all depends on how you look at the data!
