Cat-themed cupcakes are the perfect surprise for the cat lover in your life. While the task of decorating may seem challenging at first, all you really need is some chocolate, colored frosting, and a bit of patience. This tutorial will take you step by step through decorating cupcakes to look like cat faces, paw prints, and balls of yarn.

Ingredients

  • 24 cupcakes (any flavor, baked and cooled)
  • White or off-white frosting (any flavor)
  • 4 oz. white candy melts (about 115 grams)
  • Food coloring in red, black, and blue

Part 1 of 4:

Preparing

  1. 1
Separate your frosting. Split the frosting into four parts by placing them into separate bowls.
  2. 2
Color the frosting. Use food coloring to make each bowl of frosting a different color.
    • Add 3-4 drops of red to make pink frosting, 6-7 drops of blue to make blue frosting, and 6-7 drops of black to make black frosting.
    • Mix until the color is even throughout (no major white spots or streaks). Continue to add food coloring if the desired color is not reached.
    • Leave the fourth bowl of frosting plain.

  3. 3
Transfer the colored frosting into zip-top bags.
    • Place a zip-top bag into a glass and fold the opening of the bag over the edge of the glass.
    • Spoon one of the colored frostings into the bag, remove any excess air from the top of the bag and zip shut.
    • Repeat filling process with the other two colored frostings.
    • Cut about an 1/8 of an inch off of the corner of each bag so that the frosting can be piped.
  4. 4
Melt your candy melts. Place the candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt them in the microwave at 10-second intervals, stirring them after each microwaving session. Continue microwaving until the candy melts become a thick liquid (a pipe-able consistency).
    • Pour half of the melted candy melts into a zip top bag and cut a little bit off of the corner of the bag so the mixture can be piped
  5. 5
Pipe the white part of the ears. On a parchment paper-lined baking tray, pipe the white candy melts into V shapes. Be sure to keep the candy melts at a warm temperature for easy piping.
  6. 6
Color and pipe the other half of the candy melts. Use a few drops of red food coloring to make the remaining melted candy melts pink and transfer it to a zip-top bag.
    • Use the pink candy melts to fill in the white V shapes and make triangles.
    • Allow ears to cool completely before removing them from the parchment paper

Making Cat Faces

  1. 1
Frost the cupcake. Using an angled spatula or butter knife, frost the cupcake with enough white frosting to cover the top and smooth it out to create a flat surface.
  2. 2
Make the eyes. Using black frosting, make two vertical lines on the top third of the cupcake.
  3. 3
Make the nose. Using pink frosting, make an upside-down triangle/heart under the two eyes to make the nose.
    • Start piping one corner of the nose and move your hand as if you were writing the letter V.
  4. 4
Make the mouth. Use black frosting to make the mouth of the cat.
    • Start piping from the bottom of the nose and make a backward "J" shape.
    • Pipe another J shape for the other side of the mouth.
  5. 5
Make the whiskers. Use black frosting to make whiskers on each side of the mouth.
    • Starting close to the cat’s mouth, make three lines moving away from the mouth until you reach the end of the cupcake. Make the whiskers on the other side of the face using the same process.
  6. 6
    Add the ears.
    • Remove two candy melt ears from the parchment paper and flip them over so the smooth side faces up.
    • Stick the bottom edge of the ears into the frosting above the cat’s eyes.

Making Paw Prints

  1. 1
Frost the cupcake. Similar to the cat face cupcake, use an angled spatula or butter knife to frost the cupcake with enough white frosting to cover the top and smooth it out to create a flat surface.
  2. 2
Make the base of the paw. Using pink frosting, pipe an upside-down heart shape on the bottom third of the cupcake.
  3. 3
Make the toes. Using pink frosting, pipe four ovals above the base of the paw.

Making Balls of Yarn

  1. 1
Make the first layer of yarn.
    • Use blue frosting to make horizontal lines on the bottom third of the cupcake.
    • Rotate the cupcake 120 degrees clockwise.
  2. 2
Make the second layer of yarn.
    • Use blue frosting to make more horizontal lines on the bottom half of the cupcake starting from the left side.
    • Rotate the cupcake 120 degrees.
  3. 3
Make the third layer of yarn. Use blue frosting to fill in the remaining space with more horizontal lines.
  4. 4
Make the end of the ball of yarn. Add a curly line using blue frosting on the top of the cupcake to create the image of the end of the ball of yarn.
  5. 5
Congratulations! You just made a set of cute, cat-themed cupcakes!
