A Glossary of Species in D&D (and Baldur’s Gate 3 )
- Aarakocra - Winged avian people originally from the Elemental Plane of Air. They have bird-like features and are often more comfortable soaring through the air than walking on the ground.
- Aasimar - Planetouched humanoids with a spark of the celestial Upper Planes in their blood. While not all aasimar are good-aligned, they have visible celestial features and talents courtesy of their bloodline.
- Autognome - Autognomes are mechanical beings, usually constructed by rock gnomes. However, they can become separated from their creators and gain a sense of autonomy.
- Bugbear - Bugbears are a type of goblinoid, though they’re very tall and strong compared to the average goblin. Despite their height, bugbears can also be quite stealthy—a gift from their distant fey ancestry.
- Centaur - From the waist up, centaurs look like elves; from the waist down, they have the bodies of horses. In D&D , they typically come from the Feywild, with an innate connection to nature and animals.
- Changeling - Changelings are the ultimate shapeshifters, capable of wearing different faces and appearances with nothing more than thought and willpower. Their “true” forms have a faded appearance that lacks detail.
- Dragonborn - Although descended from dragons, dragonborn are a unique species with a draconic appearance. They’re medium-sized and bipedal (compared to full dragons), embodying the strengths of both dragons and humanoids.
- Dwarf - Dwarves are short, stout, and have an unmatched affinity for stone and metal. The original dwarves lived in underground stone cities, and many still do—although they also live in different lands across the surface.
- Elf - Elves are supernaturally lovely and graceful, with pointed ears and innate ties to the Feywild and magic. Many elven subspecies exist, including high elves, wood elves, drow, sea elves, and astral elves.
- Eladrin - Eladrin are elves who never left the Feywild—and, thus, are fey creatures (unlike traditional elves). Their emotions manifest in their ability to change with the seasons, shifting between winter, summer, fall, and spring.
- Fairy - Fairies are fey folk resembling small elves, usually with insectile wings. They come from the Feywild and tend to have special characteristics tied to the magic of their homeland.
- Firbolg - Firbolg are reclusive half-giants descended from the fey as well. The first firbolgs were guardians of primeval forests, and many still are—though all firbolgs, regardless of their homes, can communicate with flora and fauna.
- Genasi - Planetouched humanoids with a bloodline connected to one of the Inner Elemental Planes. There are earth, air, fire, and water genasi, each with characteristics based on their connection to that specific element.
- Giff - Large, very conspicuous beings resembling hippopotami, giff are unique because they have no memory of their home world; instead, they wander the Astral Plane or multiverse.
- Gith - Gith are humanoids formerly controlled by mind flayers, though they’ve broken away and split into two main factions: the fierce githyanki and wise, peaceful githzerai.
- Gnome - Gnomes are a small humanoid people with a natural disposition for good cheer, as well as inventive skills and creativity.
- Goblin - Goblins are small, adaptable, and curious, capable of thriving even in dangerous areas where others might not. They also have a knack for escaping trouble despite the odds!
- Goliath - Like firbolgs, goliath are related to giants—and their superior height reflects that connection. They’re also naturally quite resilient, especially to the cold and high altitudes, because of their giant ancestors.
- Hadozee - Hadozee are bipedal beings with ape-like features. They’re known for their love of exploration, leaving their home world en masse due to the fierce predators there.
- Halfling - Halflings are small, nimble humanoids with a lucky streak and a deep love of home and hearth, though they’ve also been known to strike out and see the world when given a chance.
- Harengon - Harengon are rabbit folk from the Feywild, blessed with fey luck and a love of freedom.
- Hobgoblin - Hobgoblins are another goblinoid species with origins in the courts of the Feywild, though many were driven from that realm long ago.
- Human - Humans are among the most common species—and also one of the youngest known species in the current D&D worlds.
- Kalashtar - Kalashtar are humanoids with an innate connection to renegade spirits from the plane of dreams.
- Kenku - Avian folk resembling ravens, kenku are keen and perceptive, with the ability to mimic any sounds they hear (including other people’s voices).
- Kobold - Kobolds are small reptilian humanoids with draconic ancestry; some serve chromatic or metallic dragons as a result, while others avoid them entirely.
- Lizardfolk - Lizardfolk are native to the Material Plane, having lived there since the world’s creation. They’re natural survivors and may be related to dragonborn or kobolds.
- Minotaur - As depicted in Greek mythology, minotaurs are humanoids with bull-like heads and features. They were possibly created by the Lady of Pain in Sigil to patrol her magical mazes.
- Orc - Orcs are tough, tenacious, and powerful, possibly created by the one-eyed god Gruumsh (known as a warrior and leader of his people).
- Owlin - Owlin are owl-kin from the Feywild, and they can resemble any variety of owl, though they’re bipedal with arms and legs as well as wings.
- Plasmoid - Plasmoids are amorphous; they don’t have a typical shape or humanoid features. Rather, they absorb oxygen and eat food through osmosis, as their bodies are made from plasma-like ooze.
- Satyr - Satyrs are a fey species with goatlike legs, though they resemble a humanoid from the torso up. They have an innate talent for performance and merriment.
- Shifter - Although shifters resemble humans, they also have a bestial side; they can enhance their animalistic features as a result of having a lycanthrope ancestor.
- Tabaxi - Tabaxi are bipedal cat-folk created by the Cat Lord (a divine being) with the curiosity and appearance of cats.
- Thri-kreen - Thri-kreen are insect-like people with mandibles, antennae, and two pairs of arms; they communicate with others via telepathy.
- Tiefling - Tieflings are Planetouched humanoids connected to the Lower Planes (typically the Nine Hells). They may be descended from devils or associated with them through a bargain struck by their ancestors. Although tieflings’ personalities aren’t dictated by their blood, they sometimes face fear and judgment from others.
- Tortle - Tortles are reptilian turtle folk; they’re bipedal but carry shells on their backs like turtles do, giving them natural armor (and shelter).
- Triton - Tritons are humanoids mainly living in the world’s seas and oceans. They come from the Elemental Plane of Water; many still act as guardians of the seas.
- Warforged - Warforged are manufactured entities built from metal and wood, but they have autonomy and the ability to feel emotions.
- Yuan-ti - Yuan-ti are humanoids with snake-like features (like forked tongues and snake eyes or scales on their bodies) and a natural resistance to poison.
