The May Day maze is an activity you can do in early May to celebrate May Day Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The maze was set up by Tom Nook, and you get there using the May Day ticket he gave you. Once you're there, navigate the maze while trying to optimize your tools and make them last. You may even encounter a certain blue and white cat!

Steps

  1. 1
Wait for Isabelle to tell you about the May Day ticket. During the morning announcements on the first day of the May Day celebration, Isabelle will tell you about the May Day ticket. She will also let you know that you should speak to Tom Nook to learn more. After that, the announcements will either be over or Isabelle will proceed to tell you any other news, such as a visitor at the campsite.
    • Even if it is still late April, you may still be able to do the May Day island. As of the 1.10 update, May Day starts on April 28 and ends on May 7.
    • If you don't want to do the May Day maze on the first day of the celebration, wait as long as you want before starting the maze. Just be careful that you don't miss the event.
  2. 2
Head over to Resident Services after the morning announcements are over. Once you're inside, go and speak to Tom Nook like you would if you wanted to upgrade your house or build a bridge. When you speak, instead of the usual menu of options, he will tell you about the May Day ticket waiting for you at the airport.
    • If you missed part of his explanation or weren't paying attention, Tom Nook will let you repeat the explanation over and over as many times as you would like.

Head over to the Dodo Airlines, or the airport. Walk inside and speak to Orville. He will then tell you once again that you have a May Day ticket with your name on it waiting for you. When he is done talking, select "I wanna fly". Select the "use May Day ticket" option.
    • You may see that you won't be able to bring all of the items in your inventory with you. While you may be worried, you will get them back, and not having your tools is a part of the challenge of the maze.
  4. 4
Figure out how to use all of the tools used in the maze once you arrive. Before you start the maze, you should learn how to use all the tools and other items that will appear in the maze. A list of common tools and what they do is below.
    • Shovels can be used to do many different things, making them a valuable tool. They can be used to dig up shrubs, tree stumps, and even entire trees if you have a fruit powerup. To use the shovel, walk up to the tree or shrub you would like to dig up and press A.
    • Shrubs, trees and rocks are used as obstacles. All of them can be dug up or broken with a shovel, though you need to eat a fruit before you can dig up a tree or break a rock. You can also use an axe to chop down the tree instead.
    • An axe or worn axe can both be used to chop down trees. The only difference between them is that worn axes can only chop down one tree before breaking. You can use an axe by walking up to a tree and pressing A.
    • Your native fruit is one of the most important things in the maze. You can find it sitting on the ground in multiple parts of the maze. If you eat it, you will be able to break rocks and dig up entire trees.
    • A ladder can be used to travel up and down certain elevated parts of the maze.
  5. 5
Solve the maze. The maze should be made mostly of the hedge fencing you get from Lief set up in a maze pattern, with a bunch of shrubs, trees, your native fruit, rocks, and wood in different parts of the maze as obstacles. You might even see a crafting table or an extra tool lying around. While every year the maze will differ, there are a few general tips to use when solving the maze that are listed below. Even if you do mess up and want to start over, you can reset the maze by calling the rescue services.
    • Instead of wasting fruits to remove trees, you can also chop them down using a worn axe, which can be obtained from inside the maze. You don't even have to use your shovel to dig out the stumps-you can just sit on them and rotate yourself to make it to the other side.
    • Don't use any fruit unless it is absolutely necessary. Most of the time, there are exactly enough fruits to make it to the end of the maze, so you shouldn't waste them.
    • Don't try and collect the bell vouchers until the end of the maze. This will make collecting the bell vouchers and completing the actual maze much easier.
  6. 6
Talk to Rover (the blue and white cat) when you complete the maze. He will then congratulate you for making it to the end of the maze, and ask you a bunch of questions, which you are given options for how to answer. Once the conversation is beginning to end, he will let you know that he will give you a gift to remember him by, and that it will be coming in the mail soon.
    • Keep in mind that while how you choose to answer Rover's questions won't have an effect on the gameplay, it will determine which dialogue he uses next.
  7. 7
Stay on the special May Day island as long as you want. If you want to go back, head over to Wilbur by either running through the maze backwards or calling the rescue services. Speak to him, and he will give you the option to go back home. Click on that, and then say that you are sure that you want to leave.
    • Remember that once you go home, you will not be able to go back to the special island or see Rover until next year. You will also get all of the items you had in your inventory prior to visiting the May Day maze back in your inventory, and anything you collected from the maze will be gone.
  8. 8
Check your mail the day after completing the maze. As Rover mentioned when you talked to him at the end of the maze, he will send you a present, Rover's Briefcase (if it's you're first time going through the maze) or Rover's photo (If it's you're second time), in the mail to remember him by. These items are both furniture, and you can use them to decorate your house or island.
    • If you collected any Bell Vouchers, which are the golden-colored tickets you can buy under the "Redeem Nook Miles" section and the ADB, these will also appear in your mailbox the next day. To get the bells for them, they can be sold at Nook's Cranny. They will sell for 3,000 bells each.
