Best way to get rid of hiccups fast
I hate getting hiccups and I feel like I get them so much more often than all of my friends. It has gotten to the point where it’s kind of a running joke that I’m always hiccupping. What can I do when I get one of these hiccup fits to make them stop? How do I get rid of hiccups fast?
I've heard about so many home remedies for this, from holding your breath to drinking milk upside down. Sometimes, you get hiccups when you suck in excess air. Other times, it’s because your phrenic nerve is irritated. A lot of people get hiccups if they eat too much, then they get a little acid reflux and that reflux irritates the nerve. I don't believe in any of the weird “tricks,” like the milk thing, but if it works for you, great. I would recommend taking a reflux medication, like Tums or something, that will reduce some of your acid reflux.
Different techniques work for different people! Try one of these:
- Holding your breath for as long as you can
- Breathing into a paper bag
- Sipping or chugging cold water
- Swallowing a spoonful of sugar
- Gently pulling on your tongue
- Biting into a lemon

What has worked for me is a combination of breathing and drinking water. What I'll do first is empty all the air out of my lungs, like reaaally get all the air out of there. Then I'll hold that for as long as I can and swallow some soda (or water, if you don't have soda). This has worked for me!
