If you want to do gel nails at home, you need all of the equipment to do a good manicure. You need the gel base, gel polish, gel top coat, and then you need a gel lamp. You have to have a gel lamp in order for the gel to cure, unless you can polish your nail and then go outside and hold it in the sun, but I wouldn't necessarily rely on that method.

To do gel nails at home, definitely use a UV lamp, and make sure to apply thin layers of gel. Thick layers can cause bubbles and will peel off more easily. Thin layers make it last longer.
