It usually takes between 2-4 months to learn Japanese, depending on how much effort you put in. If you only attend one class a week for 2 hours, it might take around 4 months to reach the upper beginner or lower intermediate level. If you commit to 2 classes per week and study, you can finish the upper beginner level in around 2 months.

According to the FSI it takes 2200 hours to become what most would consider to be fluent in Japanese. How long it will take you also depends on your resources and how good you are at learning, among other things. But most consider this a pretty good (minimum!) guidline.
