I want to learn how to astral project
Hey wikiHow! I was recently introduced to the concept of astral projection. I want to learn how to do it, but I want to be especially careful about being safe when doing it. I’ve heard some horror stories about people losing their mind easily or phasing in and out when they’re awake. What are your big beginner’s tips? How do I get started?

The biggest danger is not grounding yourself. Before you attempt to astral project, there needs to be something that pulls your energy back into your body so that you can return to where (and who) you are.
If you're not a seasoned astral projector, make sure that you're with someone who is experienced so that they can facilitate and help guide you through it. You can also use a guided visualization. The important thing is that someone or something is in place to help keep you safe.

What are some things that go wrong and how to prevent such from happening? Also what is referred to as the silver cord?

You already need to have an established meditation practice. You need to be able to direct your awareness and let go at will.
I recommend doing it in the evening and not eating beforehand, because eating grounds your awareness more in your body. It’s best done lying down. Breathe in and out for about 10 minutes, and put your awareness in the room around you. Before closing your eyes, take a look around and memorize the room. Then close your eyes and keep visualizing the room while you’re breathing and focusing — just let go. That’s the best way I can describe it.
If you do manage to project into your astral body, it helps to tie a thread around your body (or even just imagine doing so) to help you return to it. If you do it in a controlled environment and make it a practice, it can be safe. But it takes time, practice, and dedication. It’s not something you can just try on a whim — you have to warm up to it. Some people use it to explore or even to spy on others. You can even meet people in that state, from what I’ve heard.

A lot of beginners find it difficult to astral project because they don't really believe it. If you don't believe in astral projection, you're not going to be able to do it. You have to dispel all doubts and fears from your mind and have complete confidence in your ability to astral project. And then you need to practice it, consistently, for it to become natural if you want to be able to do it regularly.

Set an alarm for a little earlier than you'd typically wake up. It's easier to astral project in the first few moments after waking, when you're still drowsy. While you're drowsy, you can enter into a hypnotic state that can turn into a vibrating state that can turn into astral projection. You have to focus on the energy of your body and when it feels right, envision yourself detaching from your body. Make sure your eyes are closed for all of this.
