There are several tips and tricks you can use to get cheaper Airbnbs when you travel, like:
  1. Booking a longer stay. Some hosts offer discounts for longer visits.
  2. Booking a newly listed property. Airbnb offers a discount to the first 3 people who
    book a new listing.
  3. Booking far in advance. Some hosts offer cheaper rates the further out you book.
  4. Booking within a week of your stay. On the other hand, some hosts lower rates if they have last-minute openings.
  5. Negotiating with the host. It doesn’t hurt to message the host and ask if they’re willing to work with you on the price.

Most hosts don't offer discounts unless you're a first responder or part of a special group. But you can filter listings by price per night to find properties within your budget. Another trick is to look for smaller properties with more sleeping areas—for instance, a two-bedroom house with five beds rather than a five-bedroom house. It’s a simple way to save while accommodating a group.

Here's a good tip. When you ask for a discount, ask for a discount in the local currency. If the property you're looking at is priced at $2000.00 USD, but you're going to India, whatever discount you're hoping to get, convert it to their currency and say something like, “Hey, I'm on a budget. Can you give me these dates for X price Indian rupees?” And concretely stating the number you're looking for is also better than just saying, “Hey, can you give me a discount?” State a number. And then the host will come back and they might say no, or they might say "here's 20% off"!

However, I will say that I've stopped asking for discounts as a guest because the only times I've gotten a discount have been times I've also had negative experiences. In my experience, the hosts who are giving the discounts are the people who already know that they have a bad Airbnb.

One tip that has worked for me in the past is if it's a relatively new listing or a listing with not a lot of reviews, sometimes if you reach out to the owner and ask for a small discount they will agree to it because they want to build up the reputation of their airbnb.

You can also try to find the owner's contact info outside of airbnb, like on instagram or facebook, and message them there to try and book direct. They'll be able to save on the airbnb fees and will likely be happy to pass on some of the money they saved to you as a discount

Are you traveling during a peak or busy season? If the Airbnb doesn't have a lot of bookings, it doesn't hurt asking for a small discount if you're staying for more than a few nights. Some hosts are willing to negotiate and come back with a better price, but others may be pretty set on their prices.

It may also help to look for new hosts on Airbnb who just started listing. There's a good chance they have lower prices so more people stay there and leave positive reviews.

I want to add to the last comment that if you've booked through AirBNB and they have nobody booked for the day you leave, they might offer you an extra night for a discounted price just to get the room filled, especially as it gets closer to your travel dates and especially if it's in the off-season or if the day after your trip is a workday, in which case it's going to be less in demand. This has happened to me multiple times and I almost always take advantage of the extra day and extend my vacay a little :)

Also, probably goes without saying, but the type of room you're booking will affect the cost, of course. If you want a giant mansion to yourself, you'll be paying out the nose, but if you don't mind sharing a bathroom and common areas with other travelers, you're going to pay a LOT less. Totally worth it, IMO.

I know we're here for AirBNB but if anyone has tips on how to spend less overall on trips I'd be all ears. I love traveling but I feel like I always spend so much on just flights/gas and lodging and it's hard to feel liek I need to forgo museums and dining out and actually experiencing the place I'm visiting, just to save money. How do other people do this??

I agree with reaching out to the host - as a host I've sometimes offered a discount if someone's traveling by themselves (they won't use all the beds etc), or if they're staying for more than a night or two. There's no harm in trying - the worst they can say is no! :)
