My gel x nails are starting to lift up and don't look as good as when I first got them. Does anyone know how to remove gel x nails at home so I can save money? Do I have to wait and make an appointment with my nail tech instead? What are your thoughts?

The removal process is the same as for a gel manicure. You would start by filing it down, and then, since you're removing it, I would cut off the bulk of the nail (if you have a longer nail). That way, you're not wasting product trying to remove something that you're just going to cut down anyway. I would cut the nail and then use cotton soaked in acetone wrapped in aluminum foil to remove it. Wait 15-20 minutes for it to work, then use a cuticle pusher to remove the product. If it’s not all off after the first round, rewrap it and wait another 10 or 15 minutes. Continue this process until all of it is removed.

After you remove your nails, it's important to replenish their natural oils by applying cuticle oil. Cuticle oils nourish the nail after having extensions and after being washed every day, so replenishing the natural oils keeps your nail a little bit bendy so it's easier to apply nails or polish again in the future.

You can remove gel x nails at home without scheduling an appointment with your nail tech. Just follow these quick steps:
  1. File the surface of your nails to remove the shiny top layer.
  2. Soak cotton balls in 100% acetone and wrap them around your nails with aluminum foil.
  3. Let your nails soak for 10-20 minutes so the gel softens.
  4. Gently scrape the gel x nails off with a cuticle pusher or the edge of your file.
  5. Resoak your nails if there's still more gel stuck on them.

These are all great, but I'd say to wait until you can see your nail tech if your nails are already damaged or peeling. They'll be able to remove the gel x a lot easier and without causing issues with your nails.

If you need to know how to remove gel x nails without acetone, just use the hottest water you can tolerate and add a couple squirts of dish soap. Then, soak your fingernails for about 10-15 minutes in the hot water to break down the gel extensions.
