What are your absolute favorite games of all time? Odds are there are at least a couple of games near and dear to your heart—games you continually return to every so often, just because you love them so much. Why not incorporate a game like that into your gamertag? You could draw from a significant location, event, quest, or character from your favorite game. Think about your favorite video game characters.
Similarly, who are your favorite video game characters of all time? Could you work their name into your gamertag somehow? There are a lot more characters than games out there, so you may have an easier time creating a unique gamertag if you’re thinking about favorite characters (rather than favorite games).

• You could combine a character’s name with a dynamic adjective or descriptor, for example. Get creative and see what you come up with. Plus, you don’t have to limit yourself to video game characters. Brainstorm your favorite characters from different books, movies, and TV shows, too. Everything is fair game!

Incorporate a hobby into your gamertag.
Whether you’re into knitting, playing the guitar, painting, or playing soccer, try using one of your favorite hobbies as inspiration for your gamertag. You could include the name of the hobby itself in your gamertag, or just refer to the hobby somehow. This can be a creative way to personalize your gamertag, beyond just relating it to a game or character you enjoy!

Combine different languages or symbols.
If you don’t like any of the gamertag ideas you have so far, try using words from other languages. You could also try adding related symbols to your gamertag or combining words from multiple languages (especially if you’re multilingual!). Personalize your gamertag.
We’ve talked a little about personalizing your gamertag using a favorite hobby, but you can even go beyond that! If you have a beloved pet, you could use their name in your gamertag—or you could incorporate the name of someone special in your life. You could even use an inside joke between you and your friends to inspire your gamertag! Anything important from your everyday life is on the table; it’s okay to make a gamertag that’s more on the personal side. Other gamers might not understand it, but you will—and that’s what matters!

Make a joke or pun with the gamertag.
Show off your sense of humor! A funny gamertag can be unique, memorable, and entertaining for the people you play with (as well as for you). You may even find that other gamers want to team up with you more because of your gamertag, since humor can help make a positive impression.

• Just remember not to use any dirty or inappropriate language in your gamertag; always follow the guidelines given by whatever platform you’re gaming on to ensure you don’t have any trouble. And, since gamertags are typically pretty short (Xbox allows up to 12 characters, for example), any joke or funny name you use should be brief, too!

Opt for a totally random gamertag.
If nothing else appeals to you, there’s nothing wrong with just picking a gamertag that’s completely random or off the wall. Any nonsense phrase or silly combination of words could make a great gamertag—and, as a bonus, the gamertag is less likely to be taken by someone else if it’s random. So, don’t worry too much about putting together a flawless gamertag, or one that makes perfect sense because “random” can be just as fun!
