Unless you plan on cheating to prevent your Sim from ever being poor, your Sim will eventually need a job to pay the bills (as well as other expenses). This wikiHow will teach you how to get a job in The Sims 3.
Steps
Method 1
Method 1 of 3:
Going to the Job Site
-
1Find the lot for the job you want your Sim to get. Go into Map View, find the lot that offers the career track your Sim wants, and click on its icon.
- Most jobs are offered at rabbit hole locations - that is, you can't enter the building with your Sim. These lots have red icons.
- While many playable lots don't offer jobs, some (such as the fire station) will offer professions instead. These lots have a blue icon.
-
2Select Join [x] Career . The button that appears will depend on what lot you've selected - for example, "Join Criminal Career" or "Join Law Enforcement Career".
- Lots that offer part-time jobs, such as the grocery store or spa, will say Get Part-Time Job instead.
- Any professions added with expansion packs (e.g. Ambitions) will be labeled as Join [x] Profession , such as "Join Stylist Profession".

3Wait for your Sim to go to the lot. Once your Sim arrives at the lot, they'll walk into the building and receive an "Available Jobs" popup. The job(s) listed will be limited to the desired career track.
-
4Click on Accept Career to accept a job. As they exit the building, your Sim will get a popup saying when their first day of work is, and who their boss is.Advertisement
Method 2
Method 2 of 3:
Using the Paper, Cell Phone, or Computer
-
1Select the paper, cell phone, or computer at your Sim's house. If you're using the paper, you'll need to wait for the paper to arrive first; if you're using the cell phone, click on your Sim and select Cell Phone... , or select the cell phone in their inventory.
-
2Click on Find a Job . (If you have expansion packs installed, you may have to click Jobs and Professions... , and then select Find a Job or Find a Profession .) An "Available Jobs" popup will appear.
-
3Look through the available jobs. Multiple jobs in different career tracks will be listed in the popup; if you don't like the job listed, click on the arrow buttons on the popup to see the other available jobs.
-
4Click on Accept Career to accept a job. Your Sim will get a popup saying when their first day of work is, and who their boss is.Advertisement
Method 3
Method 3 of 3:
Registering as Self-Employed (Ambitions)
The Ambitions expansion added the ability to have your Sim work for themselves.
-
1Have your Sim earn a skill point. The skill must be in something that creates physical objects, such as Gardening, Sculpting, or Photography.
- Alternatively, have your Sim learn to play an instrument (if you have Late Night) or a horseman who competes in equestrian competitions (if you have Pets).
-
2Click on the cell phone or the City Hall. You can find these in one of three ways:
- Click on your Sim and select Cell Phone...
- Open your Sim's inventory and click the cell phone icon to the upper left of the inventory.
- Go to Map View, find City Hall, and click on its icon.
-
3Select the Jobs and Professions option. Click on Jobs and Professions... .
-
4Choose your Sim's self-employment career. Click Register as Self-Employed... and select the self-employment career your Sim qualifies for.
-
5Allow your Sim to go to City Hall. Your Sim will disappear into the City Hall to sign some paperwork, and will walk out as a self-employed Sim!Advertisement
