Ever since the summer update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released, diving for sea creatures was an important part of the game. The sea creatures you catch can be sold for bells, donated to the museum, or even given to a certain otter. The diving feature is easy; you only need a wetsuit to get started.

Steps

  1. 1
Obtain a wetsuit. As mentioned in the introduction, this is the only thing you will need to go diving. There are a few different ways to get a wetsuit, but you will only need to complete one:
    • Buy a wetsuit using Nook Shopping. Everyday, Nook Shopping will have a different color leaf print wetsuit for you to buy. While they look good, keep in mind you will have to wait for it to arrive.
    • Buy a wetsuit from either Timmy or Nook's Cranny. Everyday, they will be selling a certain color of the horizontal striped wetsuit you can buy. This method works best if you want to get the wetsuit right away.
    • If you have paid the 5,000 Nook Mile tent loan, you can also buy a wetsuit using the Redeem Nook Miles feature of the ABD machine in residents services. However, like buying the wetsuit at Nook Shopping, you will have to wait for it to arrive.
  2. 2
Put your wetsuit on. To do so, take your wetsuit and put it in your inventory if you haven't already. Open your inventory and click on the wetsuit. You should have the option to put on the wetsuit, which is the option you'll want to click on. Your character should then spin around and put on the wetsuit during a small animation. After the animation plays, you are now wearing the wetsuit.
    • While you may want to go to a wardrobe to change, you won't be able to put on the wetsuit from inside a wardrobe, or even change when wearing one.
    • To take of your wetsuit from your inventory, click the clothing button when in your inventory. As mentioned earlier, you can not change while in a wetsuit. You will also not be able to try on any clothes at the Able Sisters.

  3. 3
Walk into the water. Find a place on the beach where you can walk into the water, without anything blocking you like a palm tree or furniture. Put away any tools, and walk up to the water. Press A, and you should walk right in. You should now be treading water.
    • If you don't put away your tools, when you press A, you will just use the tool. However, you can still keep the tool in your inventory.
    • If it's not working, you may be a little too close to the pier, which is guarded by an invisible "wall". This is to prevent you from being able to swim up the river, but some of the ocean around the pier is also blocked.
    • You can also dive into the water by jumping off rocks or off the dock.
  4. 4
Swim around a bit and practice diving. To swim, simply move around like you do when walking on land. To swim faster, repeatedly start pressing A. To dive down underwater, press Y.
    • When you are underwater, you can still press A to move faster, just like if you were swimming on the surface.
    • Unlike when you are running, if you hold down A to swim faster, nothing will end up happening. You have to repeatedly press the button.
  5. 5
When you see bubbles, head toward them. These bubbles coming out of the water indicate a sea creature, so you should head over to check it out.
    • If you don't see any bubbles, but you do see a dark bluish-black shadow in the water, this is still a sea creature. You just may not be seeing the bubbles because of the angle of the camera.
    • On rare occasions, these bubbles and shadows may not be a sea creature, but rather a pearl. While it may seem disappointing that you won't get a sea creature, pearls can be sold for 10,000 bells, and they used in the mermaid DIY recipes, so these can still be valuable.
  6. 6
Swim over the creature and dive down. While underwater, swim all the way over to the shadow. Once you are on top of the shadow of the sea creature, your character will dive down on their own and collect the creature. They will then surface and a text bubble will appear, telling you which sea creature you caught.
    • Certain fish shadows will be different sizes or shapes, but the same thing will happen, no matter the size.
    • Many sea creatures will also move when you try and swim towards them, so you will have to chase them. The faster sea creatures can be a lot tougher to catch, but there is an easy way to do it. You just have to chase them into the net barrier at the edge of the sea and corner them in.
  7. 7
Repeat this as many times as you want. There are a lot of sea creatures to collect, and many of them are rare and hard to find, so you may have to make a few trips before you encounter all of the sea creatures that are in season that time of year.
    • While you can repeat this many times in a row without stopping, your should also wait a few hours before you go diving again. This way, you will also be able to catch any rare creatures or creatures that only come out at certain times of the day.
    • Don't worry if you can't fill up your critterpedia after a few months. Unless you time travel, you will have to wait many months or even a year before each sea creature has been in season.

      Tips

      • When you dive down and get a scallop, an otter named Pascal will appear, asking you if you will give him the scallop. While you may want to keep it, you should give it to him. He will reward you with either a pearl, which is rare, a piece of mermaid furniture, or a DIY recipe for mermaid furniture.
      • Make sure that you have a lot of space in your inventory before you go diving. Because the bubbles that mean a sea creature aren't very hard to find, you will end up filling up your inventory very quickly.
      • If you really want to look the part when diving, consider buying some water shoes, flip flops, or a snorkel at the Able Sisters.
