Dana Scully is the main character from the popular science fiction series The X Files. Her iconic style has inspired many outfits and hairstyles. In this article, you'll learn how to put together a Scully costume for Halloween, fancy dress, cosplay or just for fun. Let's get started!
Steps
Part 1
Part 1 of 2:
Making the outfit
-
Stick to plain office clothes. Apart from the early seasons, Scully mostly wore plain, monochromatic office clothes.
- Choose clothes such as blazers, button- up long sleeve shirts and office suit pants. Scully also often wore pencil skirts in colours such as black, grey and navy blue.
- If you opt for the pantsuit look, make sure it is in one of the colours mentioned above.
- The button up shirt should be in a lighter colour to contrast with the rest of the suit. Some ideas for colours include, blue, white and grey.
- The pantsuit is arguably the most iconic outfit the Scully wore throughout the series, or at least the one she wore the most.
-
Opt for the old school Scully look. There were times in the early seasons were Scully wore brighter outfits for the early 90's style.
- The most obvious example would be a red plaid blazer, which was worn by Scully in Season 1.

Choose high heeled footwear. It's no secret that Gillian Anderson isn't particularly tall (she's 1.6m or 5'3). Scully always wore high heels, whether she was in the office or doing field work.
- Opt for a pair of heeled court shoes, smart boots or a heeled dress shoe.
- Regardless of the style of footwear, try to get your hands on something black.
-
Add accessories. To make the costume more convincing, add some accessories. Some examples include
- An FBI ID badge. This is essential to the costume. The badge is made up of a photo of Scully, her signature and the FBI logo/emblem. Either print a badge or draw your own. Laminate the badge or put it in a plastic sleeve to make it look more convincing. Pin it to the blazer.
- Some other accessories include a flashlight and a replica glock (pistol)
- A crucifix necklace. Wear a gold cross necklace to emulate Scully.

Part 2 of 2:
Hair and Makeup
-
Search for some images on the internet to get a ideas for how to wear your own hair like Scully's or wear a wig. A simple pony tail is an option.
- Get the hairstyle right. Scully's short red hair is the most important part of the costume. Whether you wear a red wig, use temporary hair dye or coloured hairspray, make sure the colour is a fiery red/orange.
- The basic style is a short, side parted hair. You can also use a hair straightener to curl your hair inward towards your face
-
Go for a basic makeup look. Since Scully had to look fairly conservative for her work, she mostly wore simple, natural makeup. Whether you wear foundation/concealer or not is up to you, but make sure you use the following products:
- Natural eyeshadow. Scully's eyeshadow was a fairly natural shade of brown, applied all over her lids. Search for some images of her to get a better idea.
- Coral blush applied to the apples of your cheeks and swept across your cheekbones towards your hairline. Don't use too much!
- A peach/ coral lip colour. Scully wore a sort of glossy lip colour. Search for a photo of her wearing her usual makeup look. If you want to get technical, search up the colour code "#f57b61", which is a solid colour example of what Scully's lip gloss looked like.
- How much makeup you wear is up to you. Bear in mind that Scully's makeup is fairly natural
