If you have been playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf for a while now, you are probably aware that you can donate assessed fossils to the museum, but did you know you can also shrink them and display them in your own house? The process is easy and can save you a lot of space. Continue reading from step one to find out how!

Steps

  1. 1
Dig up a fossil. Every day you will find multiple star-shaped holes on the ground in your town. Four of these holes will be fossils. Simply equip your shovel and press A in order to dig it up. Fossils will be a dark blue shape with a swirl on it. It will tell you that you have dug up a fossil if you do.
    • Not all star-shaped holes are fossils. You may also dig up gyroids, pitfall seeds, rare mushrooms [1] , bamboo shoots, a time capsule or anything that you deliberately buried in your town. On Easter (Bunny Day), it is likely there will be a lot of eggs buried in the ground.
    • It is possible to find the same fossil more than once, so don't worry if you get rid of a fossil, since it likely won't be your last time finding it.
    • Fossils are only found under the grass in a town. Don't expect to see a fossil buried on the beach or at the island.
    • You cannot take home fossils from dream towns or island tours.
    • There are 67 kinds of fossils in total in New Leaf. [2]
  2. 2
Go to the museum to get the fossils assessed. Your museum will be located either on the far left or far right of Main Street. Speak to Blathers, the owl, and select the second opinion, which should be to "Assess a fossil!". You can ask him to assess multiple fossils at a time. After the fossil is assessed, it will appear as a pile of bones in your pockets.
    • If he assesses one fossil at a time, he will tell you what the fossil is, otherwise, you can check by looking in your pockets.
    • If your museum doesn't have the fossil already, Blathers may ask you if you would like to donate it. You can, but keep in mind that if you do so, you won't be able to turn it into a mini fossil until you find it again.

  3. 3
Collect all parts of the fossil. Most fossils have two or five different parts. [3] You can only shrink the fossil if you have all parts of it. This may take days, or even weeks, but if you keep at it, you can collect them sooner.
    • If you have any friends with Animal Crossing: New Leaf, you can ask them to help you. Tell them what fossil pieces you need and if they have them, they could give them to you, or you could trade.
    • Although fossil pieces appear in your catalog, they cannot be ordered.
    • Small fossils, i.e. fossils that only have one part, cannot be shrunk. These are amber, ammonite, archaeopteryx, coprolite, dinosaur egg, dinosaur track, fern fossil, peking man, shark tooth, and trilobite. [4]
  4. 4
Speak to Cyrus at Re-Tail. Cyrus is the blue alpaca working at Re-Tail. When you start playing the game, he will be asleep. You will have to wake him up before you are able to speak to him. Re-Tail is represented as a pink recycling logo on your town map, and is found within your town, not on Main Street.
    • This only works in your own town. If you are in someone else's town, or you have visitors to your town, Cyrus will always be asleep.
  5. 5
Tell him you have a project for him, and give him the fossils and the bells required to make the mini fossil. You will need all the necessary fossil pieces in your pockets, as well as enough bells to pay Cyrus. It costs ten percent of the original model's price to create. [5]
    • You only have to select one of the parts of the fossil, but you will be giving Cyrus all of them.
  6. 6
Wait half an hour for Cyrus to make the mini fossil. You can do something else in that time, or if you are impatient, you can skip ahead half an hour. After the half hour, return to Re-Tail and collect the shrunken fossil. You can do this by standing in front of it and pressing A . It will ask you if you want to take home the model. As long as you have enough pocket space, you can do so. You may display the fossil in your house, or in your personal museum exhibit.
