One of the great things about Animal Crossing: New Horizons is that it has a lot more customization than any other Animal Crossing game ever has. They even let you place furniture outside. While the customization factor is better than ever, it can make it difficult to decorate your island. Luckily, this guide will teach you how to make your island a tropical paradise.

Method 1
Method 1 of 2:

Using Trees, Flowers, and Shrubs to Decorate

  1. Palm trees are a great way to add a tropical touch to your island. You can plant them on the beach or on sand from the island designer app. You can find coconut trees on most islands; just eat a fruit and use a shovel to dig it up. You can also plant a coconut.
  2. If you want a rainforest or jungle type theme, use a mix of different flowers, shrubs, glowing moss, and trees. Try including palm trees, fruit trees, and shrubs that are flowering for a tropical jungle vibe. Flowers will also help make it look like a jungle, especially the ones that would normally grow in a jungle-type place. Glowing moss, unlike weeds, is also good for adding a bit of a natural feel, without risk of a lower island rating.

  3. Leif visits every now and then, once a week if you have upgraded resident services, so make sure to look out for him in the plaza. He sells flowers and shrubs that you may not already have on your island, which you can use to have more variety and color of the greenery on your island. If you take advantage of this, you will have lots of kinds of flowers and shrubs in no time.
  4. Hybrid flowers are a great way to add more color to your island, as they come in many different colors than the starting 3. To get hybrid flowers, plant two colors of the same flower and water them every day with a watering can. For the most part, hybrid colors mix the way paint would (for example, red and white flowers make pink flowers) but you can search up a guide for the rarer colors.
  5. 5
Plant shrubs that are in season. Unlike flowers and trees, which will flower and bear fruit all year long, shrubs have times when they are in season. This is when the shrubs get flowers. While shrubs that aren't in season still look good, it's best to plant the shrubs that are currently in season.
    • If you're trying to make a tropical theme, you may want to plants some plumerias or hibiscus. These bloom during the summer and are very tropical.

Decorating with Furniture and the Island Design App

  1. Remember to always check Nook's Cranny for new furniture items every day. You can also use certain sets to decorate with a theme. For example, if you want your island to look beach-themed, you can use items from certain sets, like the shell set.
  2. Materials to craft them, as well as the DIY recipes, are only available at certain times. For example, you can only find the DIY recipes and the materials for the Cherry Blossom set from April 1st to April 10th. Other sets that are seasonal include the Bunny Day set, the Young Spring Bamboo set, the Summer Shell set, the Toy Day items, and the recipes and large snowflakes you obtain by making perfect snowboys.
    • For tropical beach theme, you might focus on collecting items from the Summer Shell set. For a tropical rainforest theme, you might want to include a few items from the Cherry Blossom or Young Spring Bamboo sets.
  3. If you have already made your island into a 3 star island or above, and K.K. Slider has already visited your island, you can use the custom design app to make paths. You can purchase new path designs at NookStop, and you can even use your own custom designs for a nice personal touch.
    • Keep in mind that if K.K. Slider has ever visited your island, you will still have the custom design app, even if your island rating has fallen.
  4. If you don't have it yet, you can purchase it at NookStop for 6,000 Nook Miles. That may seem like a lot, but given the fact that this feature allows you to create rivers, ponds, and waterfalls, it's totally worth it. Remember to clear the area of anything before you start working.
  5. If you don't have it already, you can buy it at the NookStop for 6,000 Nook miles, much like the waterscaping permit. You can then use it to either build cliffs or remove them. You can also use it to make even better waterfalls. Make sure to keep in mind that you must clear the area you are working with of any furniture, flowers, trees or rocks.
