In middle school or high school, memorizing every United States president might be an assignment. Or, you can do it to impress your friends, or if you want to get a good grasp of U.S. history. Here is a good way to memorize all the United States presidents.
Steps
Part 1
Part 1 of 3:
Preparation
-
1Find a good setting. Find a quiet place, such as your house, your library, or other quiet spaces. Make sure it is a good place. Think about a place where you would study, work, or do school assignments.
-
2Think about the presidents you already know. Try to recite in order all the presidents you know. This will be important when you are memorizing them. You may only know a few or some of them in history class. That's ok! Try to remember them in order. If you only vaguely know the time period, recite them in order of the century (e.g. 19th century, 20th century, 21st century presidents).Advertisement
-
3Make a 15-30 minute period every day. This is when you will be memorizing each president. Don't do it at a time when you are busy, or when you have a set time. This could make you rush and not succeed.Advertisement
Part 2
Part 2 of 3:
Memorization
-
1Memorize the first five presidents on Day 1. After you've memorized the names, do research on each of them or find a big accomplishment on them. The more you know about something, the better you will remember it. Next, keep reciting those five presidents in your head until you fully memorize them. Next, try to keep reciting it during your day. The first 5 U.S. presidents are:
- 1. George Washington
- 2. John Adams
- 3. Thomas Jefferson
- 4. James Madison
- 5. James Monroe
-
2Repeat this process. The next day, do the next five presidents, and do the exact same thing. However, after you recited those five, try to recite the first five with the next five you learned that day. Once you can do that, good job! You have memorized the first ten presidents of the United States. The next 5 U.S. presidents include:
- 6. John Quincy Adams
- 7. Andrew Jackson
- 8. Martin Van Buren
- 9. William Henry Harrison
- 10. John Tyler
-
3Keep going. On Day 3, do the next five presidents and do the exact same thing and recite them with the ten presidents you learned before. Keep doing this process daily until you have finished the list. This may take a few weeks to a few months, so don't worry if you start forgetting a few presidents. It's very difficult to remember 45 people in chronological order, so keep practicing.
- Watch YouTube videos about presidents to memorize them better. Mr. Beat is a great U.S. history and U.S. president channel to watch. He makes president-related songs and talks about U.S. presidents.

Part 3 of 3:
Post Memorization
-
1After you memorize the presidents but you want to keep going, try memorizing each president's term dates and party affiliations. This will make you really know and help keep the presidents memorized in your head. Use history YouTube channels and websites like Khan Academy, Britannica, and History.com to remember the presidents' terms, party affiliations, and other family things.
- Mr. Beat 's channel can help you with the presidents. He talks about presidential trivia and he also writes songs for all the presidents (except the incumbent one, Joe Biden since his term did not end yet).
- JohnDRuddy has some videos on all of the U.S. presidents.
- Extra Credits has stuff relating to game design, literature, mythology, and history. This channel also has a few presidential videos.
-
2Keep it in your mind. If you don't use a skill, you will forget it. Try impressing a lot of your friends. At first, you might have awkward pauses, but once you keep doing it, you will be able to memorize them instantly. Also, instead of simply listing them all, you will soon be able to answer the question from your head, "Who's the 23rd president?"
- Keep repeating the presidents when you have time. Of course, don't obsess over every detail about each president every single day, as that will distract you from your family life, school, relationships, and studies.
- You can share your presidential information with your best friends! They will likely be amazed that you could remember the presidents so fast. Recommend them channels like Mr. Beat for presidential and U.S. history info.
