This wikiHow will show you how to mute a user from a Discord guild. Muted users are unable to post or react to any messages.
Steps
Method 1
Method 1 of 2:
Via the Discord UI
-
1Right-click or tap and hold on the Discord user. This will bring up a context menu for actions that can be done on the user.
-
2Select Timeout [user] . This will open a menu box that allows you to set a mute duration.Advertisement
-
3Set a duration for the timeout. Through the UI, timeouts can be set for 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, and 1 week. Any other durations must be set by a bot.
-
4Enter a reason for the timeout. Unless if a bot is configured to send messages to timed out users when they are set, they will not see the reason, but the reason will be reported in the message log.
-
5Select Timeout . This will revoke the user's message perms. The user will be able to view, but not be able to react to any messages. A banner by the message input box will appear that says "You received a timeout in [guild name]".Advertisement
Method 2
Method 2 of 2:
Via a Discord Bot
-
1Import a Discord bot. Popular options include MEE6, Carl-bot, YAGPDB, and Dyno. Make sure that moderation features are enabled.
-
2Try !mute or !timeout. Either of these commands has their own parameters. For example using !mute [user] [duration] [reason] might mute the user for the specified duration and notify the user of the reason for the mute.
-
3Code your own Discord bot. Bots on Discord can set a timeout duration of up to 28 days. Any longer is an indicator that they probably should be banned instead. A hacky workaround involves creating a dedicated mute role, though that has the disadvantage that everyone can see who is muted.Advertisement
