  • What is Pi?

In mathematics, pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pi is an irrational number, meaning its digits do not repeat, and its digits go on forever. The number is often represented by the symbol π, and it’s equal to approximately 3.14 or 22/7. [1]

    History of Pi
Ancient Babylonians were aware of the existence of the mathematical constant pi, and they used the number 3.125 to approximate it. Later, the Greek mathematician Archimedes made major progress when he calculated pi as approximately 3.1418 and discovered that it represented the ratio of the area of a circle to the square of its radius. Over the next several centuries, mathematicians continued to learn more about pi. In 1706, British mathematician William Jones was the first to use the symbol π to represent pi, and this was later popularized by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler. By the 21st century, computers were able to calculate pi to 100 trillion decimal places. [2]
