How to Play Cytus

Cytus is a rhythm game by Rayark in which you hit notes as a dynamic scan line moves up and down the screen. This wikiHow will show you some of the basics of this game and its successor, Cytus II.

Downloading Cytus

  1. The App Store is represented by a letter A on a blue background. The Play Store has a multicolored triangle pointed to the right.
  2. On mobile, you can get Cytus and Cytus II. Aside from a few differences in note mechanics, the only difference between the two games is the means of story progression.

  3. Cytus and Cytus II are not free; they cost $1.99 each. If you have an Android device, you can play Cytus for free with advertisements, but not Cytus II.
  4. The icon for Cytus is a drawing of a blue robot. The icon for Cytus II is an anime drawing of one of the characters in the game.

Playing Cytus

  1. This line moves up and down the screen. When the judgement line crosses over notes, that is your cue to hit them. Hit too early or too late and you will get "Bad" or "Miss". Hit the note perfectly and you will get "Rainbow Perfect" - a rainbow animation over the word "PERFECT" or a bolded gold "PERFECT" will appear on screen. Hit the note almost perfectly and you will get "PERFECT", but it will not have a rainbow animation or be bolded. While both will earn you the same points, one will earn you a higher accuracy (TP).
    • In Cytus II, the judgement line can speed up, slow down, or teleport, depending on the difficulty of the song you are playing.
    • In Cytus, the notes to hit while the scan line moves up appear in red and blue, while notes to hit while the scan line moves down appear in green and yellow. In Cytus II, the notes to hit while the scan line moves up appear in green, purple, and magenta, while the notes to hit while the scan line moves down appear in blue, pink, and orange.
  2. These notes are plain circles. Tap these notes when the judgement line crosses them.
    • Tap notes are assigned 'PERFECT', 'GOOD', 'BAD', or 'MISS', depending on your accuracy.
  3. These notes are characterized by a vertical bar. Hold your finger on the circle until the scan line reaches the end of the bar or until the hold circle fills up.
    • Hold notes are assigned 'PERFECT', 'GOOD', 'BAD', or 'MISS' depending on your accuracy.
  4. These notes are characterized by an arrow and a line connecting the points. Following the scan line, drag the notes, making sure that your finger touches each point.
    • Drag notes are either 'PERFECT' or 'MISS' and are scored at each point of the drag note. While you can be a little ahead or behind the scan line, the note will not register if you are too far ahead or too far behind.
    • Cytus II also has tap and drag notes, which have a hit circle attached to the head of them. These require you to tap the circle and hit the points.
  5. Cytus II has an additional note: flick notes. These can be flicked to the left or to the right to activate.
    • Flick notes are either 'PERFECT or MISS'.
  6. Any score between 700000 and 799999 is a C, 800000 and 899999 is a B, 900000 and 949999 is an A, 950000 and 999999 is an S, and 1000000 is an MM (million master).

Unlocking New Songs

  1. Cytus and Cytus II have different means of progressing through the story.
    • Cytus has all chapters unlocked so you can play any song in the story. Cytus also has "Alive" songs, which depict the story of Cytus. These can be played by tapping on the chapter progress circles. There are also a few side chapters, which require an in-app purchase to unlock.
    • Cytus II has eight free characters: PAFF, NEKO, ROBO_Head, Ivy, Crystal PunK, Vanessa, Bo Bo, and Graff.J, of which seven are related to the main story. There are also paid characters, some related to the storyline, some unrelated. Its means of story progression involves EXP and leveling up your characters.

Cytus II

  1. iM is the simulated social network inside Cytus II. These posts can be unlocked by leveling up characters, which you can do by playing songs.
    • iM is accessible from PAFF, NEKO, and ROBO_Head, as well as the character selection screen, by tapping the blue "iM" button in the corner.
  2. OS is a private database for each character, containing important audio files, video files, text files, and images related to each character. Each file in OS will have a transcript. Some will even have a cutscene attached. Some are password protected and require an access code revealed later in the story.
    • To access an individual character's OS logs, tap the character from the song selection screen, then tap the three triangles in the bottom right corner. Note that OS does not unlock for PAFF, NEKO, or ROBO_Head until you progress well into the story.
  3. To do this, tap on the compass in the bottom left corner. Selecting different objects will give descriptions for them. Certain objects have missions attached to them. Complete these missions to unlock a new song.
  4. The CAPSO! system costs $9.99 to unlock. Once unlocked, you can spend CAPSO to try to get more songs and other game content. CAPSO does not sync to the cloud - only unlocked rewards do.
    • To access CAPSO!, press the Black Market button on the character select screen (has an image of a B and a sideways M), then select "CAPSO!".
  5. The Black Market has character and collab song packs. For example, it has Cytus II x maimai DX+, Cytus II x DJMAX, and other music packs that add 5 additional songs to the game. Each pack costs $4.99.
    • To access the song pack purchase screen, press the Black Market button on the character select screen (has an image of a B and a sideways M), then select "Song Packs".
    • You can also get VOEZ song packs from the CAPSO! shop, spending either money or CAPSO! to unlock.
