If you often create notes in OneNote that should be password-protected (like diary and journal entries), follow these directions, because even though it may seem too much, it's more secure that way.

Method 1
Method 1 of 2:

From a Mobile Device

  1. 1
Open OneNote. On a mobile device, download and install OneNote, and log in if necessary. The apps are mostly white, but feature the stripey purple box with an N inside a darker purple box to its left, and have the title "OneNote" below it.
  2. 2
Access the feature. From a mobile device, hold your finger down for several seconds on the folder section you'd like to add the password to, then tap the Password button. This button looks like a padlock towards the bottom of the screen just above the Sticky Notes section.

  3. 3
Get the protection the section deserves. From a mobile device, click the Protect This Section choice.
    • If you later want to remove the password, you can click the "Remove Password" by following these same steps but instead, tap the Remove Password (the bottom of the two choices).
  4. 4
Enter a password used for the section. This password should be entered into the Password field and re-entered into the Verify field. On a mobile device, these are the only two choices available and are prominently on the screen with the text selector in the Password box by default.
  5. 5
Confirm your choice. On a mobile device, you must click the "Done" button in the top right corner of the dialog box.
  6. 6
Try out your password. Get out of the folder by clicking another folder, then open the folder and begin typing your password. The password box will open once you've tapped the folder choice.

Method 2
Method 2 of 2:

From a Desktop

  1. 1
Open OneNote. OneNote has several different software and apps, but although the mobile apps run differently, those will be mentioned. On a desktop, OneNote takes the classic purple color, and from OneNote 2013 onwards, it's got the classic "N" to its icon, with an open notebook design inside it.
  2. 2
Access the feature. From a PC/desktop, OneNote's password protection can be accessed by finding the notebook's section right-clicking it, and clicking "Password Protect this section".
  3. 3
Get the protection the section deserves. From a PC/desktop, locate and click "Set Password" underneath the "Current Section" heading.
    • If you later want to remove the password, you can click the "Remove Password" choice underneath this Set Password button.
  4. 4
Enter a password used for the section. This password should be entered into the Password field and re-entered into the Verify field. On PC/desktop, you'll be given easy keyboard shortcuts between the fields including Alt + P for the Password box and Alt C for the Verify Password box.
    • Don't make it too easy that anyone can guess it and be right about your selection, yet don't make it too hard that not even you can guess it and get it right several times through. You can't reset the password after multiple attempts to get into the folder if you've forgotten it and that section will need to be deleted and all notes lost.
  5. 5
Confirm your choice. On a PC/desktop, you must click the "OK" button at the bottom of the dialog box.
  6. 6
Try out your password. Get out of the folder by clicking another folder, then open the folder and press Enter once. Type your password and click "OK".
