The number one thing I tell people when they're looking to get an external hard drive is to go with a name brand. You want to make sure you're choosing a manufacturer who's been around for a while and knows what they're doing. Something made by Seagate or Western Digital would be good.

Will this allow to download, install, and play games directly to and from the external hard drive? Or does it only work for save states?

If you have a Jailbreaked PS3, you can install online games (piracy is illegal), but if it's an original PS3 then no.

My PS3 doesn't recognize my hard disc, what do I do now?

Make sure your HDD is on fat32 format. PS3 does not recognize any other formats. I had the same issue, but after formatting my HDD to fat32, it worked perfectly.

Now that I have the backup data, what do I erase in the Playstation internal hard drive?

You can delete anything you have moved onto the external drive. Just creating the folders does not move any games into it. You have to manually transfer data, be it games, videos, pictures or saves.

What can I do if the FAT32 option is not there?

Go to Your internet browser and download AOMEI Partition Assistant Software, and install it into your PC. After the installation, run the software and select the drive that you want to format FAT32. And click all tools that you can see at the left hand side. Select NTFS to FAT32. A new window will pop-up, click Next. Next again and the process will start. Finally, click finish. Done.
