The most likely issue is dead RAM due to a chip getting damaged from the static electricity in your fingers. In that case, purchasing a new RAM is the only option.

You need to check the RAM type. Certain old motherboards are not compatible with newer RAM modules. This is especially true for laptops. Best way to buy RAM is from an authorized dealer, using the specifications on the manufacturer's website. If you have done all of this, then the issue could be improper seating of the RAM on the board, or the RAM was faulty from the start. If you have purchased it recently, you may be able to get a new one on warranty.
