My mom is Gnostic. She told me this religion was pretty secret because people usually called them witches for the practices they did. Is it the same today?

People in modern-day churches still preach agains Gnosticism, but it is not the same today. Now there is much greater tolerance for different religions. You will find that not everyone goes to church and believes in "mainstream" Christianity, and as a result, won't even know what Gnosticism is.

Maybe just try NOT being one of the rats at work; do your job well enough that fear of getting fired is less of a behavioral motivator. You can be a good Gnostic anywhere by your good example. This does not need to be an either/or choice.

A Buddhist can become a Gnostic, yes. If you were already a Gnostic, you wouldn't need to become a Buddhist. True gnosis has to do with remembering your celestial origins and the Father of the Universe. Buddha probably contemplated gnosis with his meditation. So you, too, need to focus on the Father and the One Above rather than on Buddha himself. Jesus and Buddha are often seen as exemplars of higher consciousness and union with the One. However, Buddha did not make the further claim that believing in him would have redemptive powers. Jesus is the exemplar of the Christ, which is a figure who can intercede with the Father on your behalf.
