  • Question
When fishing for most tuna is it better to go deep?
    Community Answer
    Yes.
  • Question
Do the fishermen shoot the bluefin tuna in the head before bringing it on board? Couldn't they thrash around on board and break a leg?
    Phil Howarth
    Community Answer
Nope, it is illegal to shoot tuna. Normally we "swim" the fish to let it release its lactic acid, we then rake its gills and it bleeds out whilst in the water, killing it. This is vital if you are going to sell the fish commercially.
  • Question
How long does it take on average to land a giant bluefin tuna?
    Phil Howarth
    Community Answer
Anywhere between 30 minutes to...well, I lost one at 8 hours and 3 minutes last season!
  • Question
What kind of boat should I use?
    Phil Howarth
    Community Answer
I use a large Center Console. You can use anything that is big and safe enough. If you are targeting giants, then you should consider a commercial licence that subsequently involves you getting a large amount of safety equipment for your boat to meet the Coast Guard regulations.
