  • Question
How many years can gravel be used?
    Community Answer
Gravel has no expiration date, unless the manufacturer specifically states this. It is the quality of water that determines what should be done with the substrate in a system. As long as you rinse it thoroughly during water changes and it doesn't appear dirty, it can continue to be used.
  • Question
If my gravel grows algae on it, how do I get it off without killing the good bacteria?
    Noah Bretches
    Community Answer
You could buy snails or shrimp, which will eat the algae.
  • Question
Can I put a piece of screen inside a colander to clean the gravel?

    Community Answer
Yep! I use a mesh colander to clean gravel. You shouldn't be cleaning gravel after it's added to a tank, however.
  • Question
How do I clean the algae off of the gravel without using snails or shrimps, etc?
    Community Answer
Algae-eating fish are adapted to do just that and, if your tank will accommodate one, you’ll get a dual-purpose pet and cleaner all in one fish.
  • Question
Can gravel turn tank water cloudy?
    Community Answer
Yes, which is why you should always thoroughly rinse gravel before use. Buildup of waste also clouds the water.
