    Community Answer
For the fluff, you may need to use a different pencil. Make sure the pencil is really sharp, and use small motions.
  • Question
How do I keep the drawing from looking too shaded?
    Community Answer
Refrain from smudging the paper with your hands, and if that doesn't work, use an eraser to lightly erase any over-the-top shading.
  • Question
How do I draw a twisted feather?
    Community Answer
Try to look at images of ribbons and how they're twisted. Draw the basic shape of the feather as you would a ribbon, then add the actual feather.
  • Question
What if I'm using an iPad/mobile?
    Community Answer
Use a stylus, and choose a thin "tip" from whatever app you're using. Try not to go too fast, because on a drawing app it is much harder to selectively erase.

Use realistic feathers as a reference. Unless you are doing your drawing in a cartoon style, then use cartoon feathers. Look up images online as references.
  • Question
What reference do I use so I can keep the feathers I draw even?
    Tianna Schwindel
    Community Answer
if you can find feathers outside, having the real object that you want to draw can be helpful. Keep in mind, there are different types of feathers. depending on what type of feather you want to draw, is how it will be shaped. tail feathers are long and thin, primary feathers(flight feathers) are short and slim, down feathers are stringy and light, and secondary feathers are oval shaped at the tip, but triangle at the shaft.
  • Question
I'm trying to draw a cartoon feather, and it turned out looking more like the traditional feather. Any tips?
    Tianna Schwindel
    Community Answer
Draw ovals that get more triangle shaped at one end, where the feather shaft will go. Just draw little lines going towards the shaft from the sides of the feathers and add little gaps. If you keep it nice and simple, the feather will stay a neat, simple cartoon style.
