For pet urine odors, make a solution of water and green dish soap and dip a towel into it. Blot the area with the towel, then cover the area with baking soda and let it sit overnight. Once it is dry, spray some vinegar on it and let it react for 5 minutes. Wipe it all away with a clean cloth and vacuum up any remaining baking soda.

Baking soda is the best and simplest method for deodorizing a carpet. Clean the carpet first, then apply baking soda over it. Let the baking soda sit for 24 hours, then vacuum it up. For added strength, you can add hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and water to the baking soda to create a spray (use 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of liquid soap, and 4 cups of water). Spray this on the carpet, let it sit for 24 hours, then wipe and dry the area with a towel. Let the carpet air dry completely when you're finished.

Unfortunately, it often takes time for baking soda, vinegar, or any solution you end up using to work. If you really want to get the bad smell out of the carpet, it will be in your best interest to block the area off for at least a couple hours.

You will want to first be sure you are wearing protective gloves. Then remove any large clumps by using a plastic spoon and putting it into a bag. If there is any remaining residue, you can use a tablespoon of dish soap mixed with two cups of cool water. Use a clean white cloth and dab the residue with this solution. If the stain remains, you can use hydrogen peroxide or vinegar to blot the stain. When the stain is gone, be sure to blot the area with a dry cloth to help dry the carpet.

  • Question
I had my carpets cleaned two days ago, but the dog urine smell is still there. How can I get that smell out?
    Community Answer
Use either Natures's Miracle or Simple Solutions dog urine cleaner. These neutralize the odor completely via a chemical reaction and do not harm your carpet. Find the area that smells like urine and drench it with the cleaner. Remember, when a dog pees on the carpet, it may be a small area on the top of the carpet but may be the size of a dinner plate below. Sop up any excess and let it dry. Afterward, if there is a slight yellow discoloration, use hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle to remove that residue. Just spritz it and let it dry.

  • Question
My daughter sprayed a can of scented sunblock all over her room. I have cleaned the carpets, but I can’t get rid of the strong flower smell. Do you have any suggestions on what to clean it with?
    Community Answer
Try cleaning the carpet with a 50-50 solution of white distilled vinegar and water, which should break down and eliminate the floral scent. Her room will smell strongly of vinegar for a few hours while it dries, but when it does, the vinegar and flower smell should both be gone.
