    Expert Answer
Sing it with the music for most of your practice session, then try it acapella once or twice at the end of practice. When you sing acapella, you're more likely to undercut the intervals between notes, which will throw your pitch off throughout the song.

Get familiar with current popular music as well as songs that fit your style and genre, and build a repertoire of songs in different styles that you're comfortable singing. You may find it helpful to work with a vocal coach to build your skills and confidence. When you're ready to try out, attend an open call audition or submit a video audition online or through the mail!

  • Question
I have a great voice, but usually when I sing, I get a sore throat and my voice cracks. Is there anything I can do?
    Community Answer
There are a few things you could try. First, I recommend singing lessons. A professional can teach you the proper skills and help you stop you voice cracking. Secondly, make sure the song you're singing is within your vocal range. (Again, a singing teacher can help with this.) Third, always warm up before a performance,15-20 minutes should be enough, but if the song is challenging, try 25-40 minutes. Finally, your voice may be cracking because you're nervous, or because of a medical issue. If this is the case you should talk to a doctor or vocal coach about this.

Yours is not an unusual situation. People will make allowances for youthful indiscretion. If they like you, they will "spin" your history in a positive direction. The background check is to let them know what they're getting in to.

  • Question
How can I get ready for the show, should I practice them over the next year and perfect them because I'm joining next year when I turn 13?
    Community Answer
Yes, you need to take care of and refine your voice. I personally recommend waiting until you are a bit older and your voice is more developed. However, I am not your mother and believe that everyone should have the option to choose their course in life even without others' approval. So, if you insist on auditioning so early, you need to choose a song, perfect it, and diligently take great care of your voice.
