  • Question
How do I host a webpage on a purchased domain?
    Michele
    Top Answerer
The server where you bought the domain probably offers hosting services but usually at a cost. If you want to do it for free, have your domain redirected to whatever free web service you decide to use for your website. Remember, free sites are limited in the number of pages and can have a lot of ads. On the other hand, hosting your own website as in Method 2 above, or having your site hosted where you bought and keep the domain, allows you to pretty much create as many pages as you want, without any advertising you don't put up for yourself.

  • Question
It's saying, "You have entered an address that is missing its subnet mask. Please add a subnet mask" when I try to configure the IPV6 stuff. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Subnet mask is almost always 255.255.255.0 (or you can find it in your "ip/configall" response).
  • Question
The website is asking for a subnet prefix length and it is showing "Invalid IP address." What do I do?
    Community Answer
Check over your settings, make sure your mask length is correct. This can be found in your router settings. Now check that you entered the right IP. If it starts with 192.168, then it's wrong. Reenter your external IP address, which can be found by googling "What's my IP."
  • Question
Must I buy a domain for my website?
    Community Answer
Only if you want to use a text name like "mysite.org". Otherwise, your web site's address will be 4 (or 6) sets of numbers 0-255, each separated by a period. Many virus detection programs flag this kind of address as suspicious and/or block them, just so you know.
  • Question
Can I change the domain extension when homehosting?
    Community Answer
If you have "yoursite.com" registered with a domain registrar, and you want it to be "yoursite.net", you have to register another domain name on the ".net" domain and point it to your server.
  • Question
What should I do if I type in the web address that I registered with and it doesn't appear?
    Community Answer
Your IP might have changed if it's dynamic. Ask your ISP to give you a static IP and that should solve the issues.

How do I add a subnet mask when entering the IP address?

    Community Answer
The subnet mask always comes up automatically once you have entered the IP Address.
  • Question
How can I use an IP address as my domain name?
    Community Answer
You must first find your public IP. Then, you can configure your modem/router to redirect specific ports to your local computer's IP (found in ipconfig), usually port 80. Next, set up your firewall in your PC, and finally, your hosting server on your PC (WAMP, or XAMPP). Now, simply use your public IP to access your server from the internet. As a warning, hackers can attack your home network since the traffic will go first through your modem/router, so you must be careful with this method (along with the method mentioned in the post). However, your public IP will change from time to time.

  • Question
What's the difference between a Subnet Mask and a Subnet Prefix Length?

The prefix length is the number of bits set in the subnet mask in bits. For example, your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, and your subnet mask length would be 24.
  • Question
How we can do the same thing with XAMPP server?

XAMPP is mainly for local PHP and SQL testing. Hosting with it isn't necessarily a good idea, as it lacks security and many other website hosting requirements. XAMPP is for local use only.

  • Question
I want to set up a blog for my fiction using my own name followed by .com with no other hosting name. I'm trying to generate traffic to earn money as a writer. What is the best way to do this?
    Michele
    Top Answerer
You'll need to buy a .com domain name. If you're lucky, your name isn't already taken. But you can also use .org, .web and a few others if it is. Once it's done, you can create a blog with Wordpress. Two ways to do this: the domain provider will host the blog which may cost you money, or create a free Wordpress blog and then have your domain name redirected to the Wordpress blog.
