    Expert Answer
You'll definitely want to check your local building codes before you install a gas fireplace.
  • Question
I have a working wood fireplace and want gas logs installed. What needs to be done to the chimney for this job?
    Community Answer
The chimney will need to be fully lined with the proper diameter stainless steel tube in order to handle the gas operation.
  • Question
Should there be a hole at the back of my gas fireplace wall that goes outside (along with a draft)?
    Community Answer
No. That suggests a very shoddy installation that's not professional or safe for you. Call a fireplace dealer to get their installer out before using the fireplace.
  • Question
Are there fireplaces that have an exhaust outlet in the back, or are they always on the top?
    Community Answer
There are plenty of fireplaces with rear exhaust outlets. There are even fireplaces that can be converted to rear exhausts.
  • Question
Should there be a smell when the fireplace is operating, and what is the longest time the fireplace should be operated?
    Community Answer
No, you shouldn't smell anything, most especially gas. If installed properly, they can stay lit indefinitely. However, they should never be used nor relied upon as an actual heating source for anything but the room the fireplace is in. Call a heating or HVAC company out to test, inspect, clean, and adjust everything before you plan on running the fireplace.
  • Question
What materials are needed for converting wood fire place to gas?
    Community Answer
A lot of materials. Get the written installation instructions or manual from the dealer or manufacturer. Don't accept some generic or other fireplace's instructions. Gas will normally need the chimney lined from the new fireplace all the way up to the top of the chimney with a stainless steel tube. It's quite expensive but crucial to not rotting out the chimney, which is a lot more expensive. Only then can you install the fireplace and have the plumber put in a gas line to it.
  • Question
Can a gas fireplace be build into an existing chimney?
    Community Answer
Adding anything to a chimney is usually not allowed by codes. You can usually run the flue pipe out of the side of the house above the gas fireplace.
