  • Question
What should I use to make the endoplasmic reticulum?
    Community Answer
You can use pipe cleaners, and twirl them around a bit.
  • Question
How do you make a plant cell?
    Community Answer
Basically like an animal cell but with more organelles for example: chloroplast, vacuoles, peroxisomes, plasmodesmata, and a cell wall.
  • Question
My teacher won't let us use a Styrofoam ball. She says "it has to be seen by all sides". Any ideas?

Glass or plastic baubles are good because they can be clear. Try finding one that can be split in two.
  • Question
    How can I represent cytoplasm?
    Community Answer
Cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance. So you may use slime, or simply paint the inner side.
  • Question
What could I use instead of a cupcake for the nucleus? What should I use for the nucleolus?
    Community Answer
You could use an orange? Maybe an apricot or plum are good options. A small piece of fruit like a mini apple are great options!
  • Question
What can I use for mitochondria in a clay model animal cell?
    Community Answer
You could use green skinny oval-like clay. Before you do it, look up a picture of it on the computer to see what it looks like.
  • Question
What can I use for lysosomes in an animal cell project if I can't use food and it has to be 3D?
    Community Answer
You could use items like: buttons, small plastic circles, small paper or cardboard circles, or small clay balls.
  • Question
What do I use to represent a non-edible vacuole?
    Community Answer
As it says above in Method 4, you can use marbles, hollow rubber balls cut in half, bottle caps or small cut-up pieces of a plastic bag.
  • Question
How do I make a mitochondria into a non-edible model?
    Community Answer
I used clay and rolled a fat piece with my finger and made a fat jelly-bean shaped noodle.
  • Question
How do I show the cell membrane in the model of the Jello cell with food? Is there a way to show it or is the edge of the container supposed to be the cell membrane?
    Community Answer
You could use tin foil or a plastic bag or a line of something around the edge of the bowl. Or, if you are making an animal cell, which does not have a cell wall, just a cell membrane, you could say the edge of the bowl is the membrane. But that would not work for an animal cell, since they have a cell wall and a cell membrane.
  • Question
What else can I use instead of a Styrofoam ball?
    Community Answer
You could probably use any spherical object that is of the right size and not hollow inside.

If your cell has to be edible, you could use a round fruit, such as an apricot or orange cut in half, or a cupcake, if you are using a cake to make your model. If you are using jelly, you could scoop out some in the middle of the cell and put in a different coloured kind. If your model has to be inedible, use a styrofoam / plastic ball. Follow your instructor's instructions if he/she has mentioned what to use.
