    Expert Answer
A leader's main goal is to inspire people. A manager just wants to push people in a specific direction. It's just a different perspective. In most cases, you want to inspire others, but there are certainly times when you need to just actively manage.

Vocalize and demonstrate. So in terms of vocalization, you need to communicate effectively. Make your expectations clear, give out praise when people perform, and provide feedback when necessary. In terms of demonstration, make sure that you're carrying yourself the way you want your team to carry themselves.

I think it's important to remember that feedback is really important. Even if you're kind of hands-off and you're happy with your team's performance, it's important for them to know that as well.
  • Question
How do I try to get more out of someone who is already productive, when doing a review?
    Community Answer
You could find out where their interests lie in terms of further development and try to support that. Can they be rewarded through attending training courses of interest, or a conference? You could also give them a special title for the additional work, one that is made known within the workplace as a big deal. If there is a chance of a promotion in the wings, this could be suggested as a possibility should certain standards be reached.
  • Question
How do I deal with someone who doesn't want to be managed?
    Bhuwan Singh
    Community Answer
A good manager needs to talk with the individual separately about the issue, and make him/her understand the policies and procedures of the company. And try to understand his/her concerns and work on finding a solution together. If he/she still doesn't want to be managed ask your supervisor to handle the situation, if possible.
  • Question
    How do you motivate people?
    Community Answer
Set goals with clear endpoints and rewards. It's also important to lead by example; people want to see that their boss is working hard and is there to support them, not berate them.
  • Question
How can you motivate people without an incentive?
    Community Answer
A good leader works harder than the people they lead and offers encouragement. Be sure to acknowledge jobs well done. People will work harder when they feel appreciated.
  • Question
How do I manage a friend who suddenly gives an attitude?
    Community Answer
You don't "manage" friends; that's controlling behavior. Friends are people you accept into your life as they are. If your friend is treating you in an unusual manner, than examine the dynamic between you and look for what is causing it. Talk about it with your friend, then fix it.
  • Question
How do I survive in an office where everyone is against me?
    Community Answer
Work hard, ignore the snide remarks and concentrate on your work. You work for the organisation, not those being rude or unkind. Let your work do your talking! You will soon find acceptance with those who matte. Also, try to find one or two people who are a bit sympathetic. Make gradual moves to befriend them. You shall soon see that once you have some people to connect with, the people who were hostile will tolerate you.
