Keep some hair from being bleached all the way. After you've split your hair into sections, split each of those sections into a top half, which will be seen, and a bottom half, which is underneath the visible hair. Then, you can either bleach only the top portions or leave the bleach on those sections for a longer time than the bottom ones to create a beautiful balayage effect.

  • Question
How bad will the bleach damage my hair?
    Community Answer
Bleach dries out your hair. If you leave it for more than 45 minutes, it's possible it can burn your hair off. Always take care of your hair using hair masks, conditioners, oils, etc. to give your hair a healthy look after dyeing it.
  • Question
Is it possible to dye it without bleach?
    Community Answer
Yes. There are a number of natural alternatives, such as lemon juice, but the results will not be as immediate as with bleach, and will require repeat applications.
  • Question
Does it matter how long or short my hair is?
    Community Answer
No. You can create an ombre hairstyle with long or short hair.
  • Question
How would I do it with blonde hair?
    Community Answer
If your hair is an ash blonde/dirty blonde, you can just bleach it to a very light blonde, like platinum blonde. If it's all ready very light, you can do a reverse ombre, where the top is lighter and the bottom is darker. You could also do a color ombre, like blue or purple.
  • Question
Do I put the ponytail higher and bleach, then afterwards put the ponytail lower and put in the color?
    Community Answer
You don't need to use bands when you do your hair. The directions advised to gently rub in the new color with an old toothbrush where the new color meets with the old color. This helps the new color merge in more softly. If you are using bands, put the ponytail in lower, otherwise the demarcation line between colors will be too hard edged.
  • Question
Is there a way to do an ombré without buying the bleach or dye at the store? Can I make it?
    Community Answer
You can make it, but it probably won't work as well as the box dyes. It is probably safer to just buy the box dyes, just to save your hair from severe damage.
  • Question
What age would be appropriate for this method?
    BichonBelle
    Community Answer
Any age is appropriate for the ombre method as long as the parent/guardian is okay with it. Obviously, you wouldn't want to dye the hair of a child under 6, but there really is no limit, you can be 7 or 70 to dye your hair.
  • Question
What should I do after dyeing my hair?
    Community Answer
After you dye your hair, you have to wash it and let it dry before you can style it.
  • Question
How do I know what color would look good in my hair?
    Community Answer
Most boxes of hair dye have a picture on the front to show how the final hair should turn out. Hold them up next to your hair to see which shade you prefer with your natural hair. Don't go more than 2 shades lighter than your normal hair, or you'll risk having a really unnatural looking result.
  • Question
How long does it take to do the whole process?
    Community Answer
It depends on how many colors you use, how long your hair is, how intense you want the color, etc. Unfortunately there are too many factors to consider; there's no way to say an exact time.
  • Question
How do I do a purple ombre dye?

  • Question
What happens if I don't bleach my dirty blonde hair?
    Community Answer

  • Question
What color hair dye should I use?
    Community Answer
Choose whatever color looks good in your hair and that matches the clothing color you wear a lot of. Also make sure your school/workplace allows unnatural colored hair. If not, do a natural color.
  • Question
Do I need toner after bleaching hair?
    Community Answer
It would be a good idea to use a toner so the hair doesn't look brassy or orange.
  • Question
How do I care for hair and shampoo it after I've bleached and dyed it? Do I need a special shampoo?
    Community Answer
You can get shampoo that specifies it is for "color treated" hair if you're worried about damage, but it isn't absolutely necessary. Stay out of swimming pools, as there is a chance the chlorophyll could turn your hair green.
  • Question
Would it be possible to dye my hair with a hair dye pack from a shop but not bleach it?
    Community Answer
I usually buy color that has peroxide included, which you have to mix with the color. It's worked effectively for me for many years. Also, it depends on which color you want to dye it.
  • Question
What if I have naturally curly hair and it stays tangled when dyeing it?
    Community Answer
Straighten your hair before putting anything on. After rinsing out the bleach, you are going to have to blow dry the hair, then straighten it out again. If it is straight when it is wet, then quickly apply the color.
  • Question
Three years ago I dyed the tips of my hair a dark blonde and there is still some color left. Can I just leave the old color there and dye my hair an ombre color?

You should be able to, but if you are really worried about the new color getting tarnished, try to strip your hair of the old hair dye.
  • Question
Do I have to use bleach?

  • Question
Do I actually need to use bleach?
    Community Answer
No. You can also use hair dye, but it won't work as much as the bleach will for a greater contrast.
  • Question
Will the bleach stay in forever?
    Community Answer
The bleach is permanent, but your hair will grow out in its original color. As for the dye, it will fade as you wash it and whatnot, but color safe shampoo and conditioner help.
