Is it possible to have extra rooms in the basement like you do on the main?

No. On the main floor, you can get 4 rooms (main room, left room, right room and back room), but in the basement and attic you can only get one room (they are still expandable). You can expand a room 2 times and you can get up to 6 rooms, which means you can expand your house up to 17 times.

Go to Tom Nook's (which is open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM) and ask him to expand your home. He will offer an expansion; if you want that expansion, agree to it. The next day, you'll get a bigger house and a big loan; that loan can be more than 100,000 bells.

The "Pay Off Loan" selection on the Automatic Bell Dispenser shows the amount of bells you need to pay to have your current expansion/remodel loan paid off. Once you pay off the loan, you can talk to Tom Nook and he will tell you how much the next expansion costs.
