    Expert Answer
A more powerful kick can be done with exercises like short-distance sprints, lunges, and deep squats. If you have a weighted vest, slip that on for extra resistance. The best thing to do is just repetition—the more you get the mechanics down, the less effort you will have to put into it.
  • Question
    How do I practice?
    Community Answer
Practice the kick in a large area with plenty of room. Warm up and stretch first. Keep doing the move until you get it down.
  • Question
How can I get higher kicks?
    Community Answer
Try leaning back more and increasing your leg flexibility. Use an exercise like the splits.
  • Question
Is this more effective than a spinning back kick?
    Community Answer
The spinning hook kick motion is from the side while the spinning back kick is front on to your opponent's gut. The aftermath of the spinning back kick will leave you vulnerable and there is a chance of pulling a muscle, therefore the spinning hook kick is better as a move after a split hit to a vulnerable area.
  • Question
Can you give a situational example where the spin-back hook kick is applied?
    Kendallyn Alexander
    Community Answer
In competition, it can be used. It has many factors against it though, so for a long time it was seldom used by most martial artists in tournaments, whether kickboxing or muay thai or MMA.
  • Question
Shouldn't this be performed at waist level to prevent the opponent from catching the leg?
    Kendallyn Alexander
    Community Answer
You can do that and that is the preferred method to take out someone shooting in on you on a single or double leg takedown. This is illegal in the sport of MMA because of the high potential for injury to the shooter. It's not hard for someone to crack their head barreling full force into the knee.
  • Question
How will I balance on only one foot without falling off?
    Kendallyn Alexander
    Community Answer
You have to stay still and put the same amount on each side so you will not fall.
  • Question
Should you strike the head or the side?
    Kendallyn Alexander
    Community Answer
Strike the side. So, even though MMA is already really dangerous, striking the back of the head is dangerous even by comparison.
