To speed bridge, place a block and then un-shift until you reach the end of the block, where you shift again. This will take some practice, though; until you get really good at this, try moving to the side of the block and holding "S" and a strafe key to go a bit faster than normal shift bridging.

If you are new, the best thing to do is build to diamonds using wool.
