  • Question
Can I play small forward if I am shorter than 5' 6"?
    Jonathon Nelson
    Community Answer
Yes, you can play small forward (SF) if you're shorter than 5' 6. However, just make sure that you can play just as well as a taller SF. This includes rebounding, shooting, passing, etc. Being shorter does nothing different. You just have to play harder. Taller players like to "prey" on shorter players, but by showing that you can be a "big dawg" you can prove that they can't do anything to you...
  • Question
    How should I train as a 10-year-old?
    Jonathon Nelson
    Community Answer
There is no specific training for age 10. It just depends on what you are capable of doing. Only you know what you can do and at what intensity. Practice drills your coach gives you at home and play as often as you can to improve.
  • Question
Do I have to be tall to play small forward, even if I am a very good shooter and dunker?
    Jonathon Nelson
    Community Answer
No. You don't have to be super tall. You don't have to be 7'6" Yao Ming, and you don't have to be 6'2" Chris Paul. The normal small forward height is 6'6"-6'9". But there is no designated position. Being a good shooter and dunker may not even be a small forward position.. You could possibly play a shooting guard position if you're not comfortable with your height.
  • Question
    I'm 12 and 5'11" can I be a small forward?
    Community Answer
Of course! I was 5'10 at 12 and I was a power forward. So all you need to do is do your best and practice!
  • Question
How can I become a power forward?
    Community Answer
Check out this article on wikiHow: "How to be the dominant big man on your team." Start by working out. You need to jump high, so you will definitely need strong thighs. Sculpt your arms and chisel your core. A power forward should be able to go in for lay ups, grab boards and occasionally block shots, while steering clear of fouls. PF's should also be able to shoot mid-range shots and 3-pointers, though it's not mandatory. You will have to be able to grab passes from perimeter players.
  • Question
I'm a girl and barely even 5'0, and have had zero experience with basketball. How can I train when I don't have a mentor?
    Community Answer
Join a basketball team, even one at your local recreational center. You'll be able to learn from coaching staff and your team members.
  • Question
    I'm 11 and 5'2", what position should I play?
    Community Answer
Shooting guard, maybe small forward. If you are a very good ball handler, point guard is an option too. But don't expect to be playing a post position. When I was 10-11, I was 4'8 and a point guard. So you are obviously taller than I was. If you were on my team at that time, you would probably have been a small forward.
  • Question
If I am really tall for my age and can score easily, should I play small forward?
    Connor McGeehan
    Community Answer
No, you should play center, unless you mean that you are a very good sooter. Then you should play power forward and occasionally play small forward.
  • Question
    I am 14 and 5' 10". What position should I play?
    Community Answer
Small forward would be a great position for you, or even power forward, depending on your weight.
  • Question
I'm 13 and 5'9 and I am good at driving to the basket and rebounding. What position should I play?
    Community Answer
Power forward seems like a good fit for you. Since you're good at rebounding, if you are stronger/weigh more, you may be a center too.I'd practice putbacks if you're going to play those positions.
  • Question
Can you suggest any good workouts for a small forward?
    Community Answer
A small forward should be very versatile, able to defend, to shoot, drive to the basket, and rebound. I suggest jogging or sprints to build up stamina. To defend, try practicing your defensive slides and stance. As for rebounding, try doing squats to increase your vertical jump so you can grab rebounds easier.
  • Question
What position would be good for a preteen who is tall for his age?
    Connor McGeehan
    Community Answer
Small forward if you are a good shooter and skinny, but if you are not super skinny, then center or power forward might be best. Remember though, just because you are tall does not mean you will be tall when you play basketball. I thought that I was going to play center, because I was taller than most of my friends, but then I found out that I was not tall for a basketball player. Almost all basketball players are tall.
  • Question
I am 11 and 5'1", what position should I play?
    Community Answer
You should play shooting guard or point guard. If you can shoot, consider shooting guard, and if you're more of a dribbler and playmaker, then point guard is great.

  • Question

Anyone of any height can be a small forward, but you must remember that a small forward has to be quick and they have to be capable of dribble penetration. Height isn't a huge factor in this position.

  • Question
What height do I need to be to play small forward?
    Community Answer
To play small forward, you have to be at least 6'10, LeBron is 6'10 and he is one of the shorter small forwards in the NBA. Most small forwards have to be 7'0 or 7'1 like Giannis and Kevin Durant. But the minimum is for sure 6'10.
