    Expert Answer
Coloring hair at home is more damaging for 2 reasons: 1) the products available for home use are lower quality and more damaging 2) your own application is less precise than a professional colorist's, since color isn't just touched up at the root but overlapped onto previously-colored hair again and again. The best thing you can do is start getting your hair colored at a salon. If money is an issue, try a cosmetology school or salon apprentice.

    Expert Answer
I recommend investing in a shampoo that's free from sulfates and sodium chloride and a paraben-free conditioner. If you feel the need, use a hair mask once a week. Also, follow up with a trim 10-12 weeks after coloring your hair.
  • Question
I have used multiple types of permanent hair dye, including a double ash dark brown. Why does my hair always turns a copper color after a short time?
    Community Answer
In this case I would look at what kind of water you are using on your hair. Well water is notorious for containing minerals that can alter color. Since you have used different products with the same result, the only constant in your case sounds like the water. I don't know what you can do other than ask a professional colorist for help.
  • Question
How can I avoid dry hair after dying?
    Community Answer
Deeply condition your hair regularly and avoid using heat to style your hair, like hair straighteners and curling iron. Also, consider getting a special shampoo and conditioner that is labeled for colored hair; it will keep your hair dye from fading while nourishing and hydrating your hair.
  • Question
How do I slightly lighten my hair after coloring it?
    Community Answer
Wait a few days; hair dye will usually lighten and fade on its own after the first few days/times that you wash it. If a few days have passed, and you still are not happy with the result, combine 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with 1 cup of water. Spray it onto your hair, then go out into the sun for 1 hour before rinsing it off. You can also use honey water or chamomile tea instead. Be careful, however; lemon juice will make your skin extra sensitive to sunlight and sunburns.
  • Question
I have black virgin hair and I want to dye it dark brown with a box dye. When the color fades after dyeing, will it go back to my original black hair color?
    Community Answer
No. You won't get your original hair color back. Your original hair color will be seen only on the new growth. After the color fades, it will leave your hair brownish in color.
  • Question
Could I use jojoba oil for my hair?
    Community Answer

I have natural hair. The only chemical I have is a box color, and I use shea moisture products. I have curly locks, I use vegan coconut oil. How often should I oil my hair? The dye is a permanent dye.
    Community Answer
Oil your hair once every week, or once every other week if your hair is naturally oilier.
  • Question
What can I do if my hair looks like it has been burnt?

  • Question

It won’t have much of an impact, but you will see some dye on your shirt. I recommend putting your hair up so it won’t stain your clothes.

  • Question

  • Question
What do I do if my hair is frizzy after bleaching it?

  • Question
What do I do after coloring my hair if it's rough and my hair is falling out?
    Community Answer
If your hair is falling out, see your doctor. This could possibly be because you have over bleached it but to be safe, get checked out. Make a homemade mask or even use a store bought one and get your ends professionally cut. Over time it will get less rough.
  • Question
Can I put oil on my hair right after coloring it?
    Community Answer
Yes, you can! Since dyes are very drying at times, it is very good to replenish moisture in the hair, especially after coloring it.
