Can I soften hard honey to be used in a recipe, or does it lose something?

Your recipe will be the same. The honey will still be absorbed when it is softened, and the flavor won't change.
  • Question
Can I put the honey in the fridge after I've softened it?

Yes, it may crystalize, but you can just heat it carefully in the microwave or a pan of hot water.

You can try scraping the hardened honey off the shelf with a blunt knife. Apply a cloth soaked in boiling water to the hardened honey on the shelf, and use rubber gloves so you don't burn your hands.

    Community Answer
Hardened or crystallized honey can be difficult to use, but don't worry! You can actually dissolve the crystals and soften the honey really easily. Fill a pot or bowl with warm water and place the jar of crystallized honey in the water until it softens. After a few minutes, you'll see the crystals disappear and the honey will start to flow again.
  • Question
Can I microwave honey to soften it?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
Yes, as long as the honey is in a microwave-safe glass jar. Take off the metal lid and set your microwave to a low power setting. Place the jar in the microwave, set the timer for 1 minute or less, and wait for the honey to finish warming up. Stir the heated honey with a spoon to see if if the crystals are gone. If the honey still looks crusty and hardened, reheat it for 30 seconds or less.
  • Question
What happens if honey gets hard?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
Real, natural honey hardens and crystallizes when the temperature gets cooler. It actually doesn't harm or change the honey at all. Plus, you can easily soften and de-crystallize the honey whenever you want. Simply fill a pot or bowl with warm water. Place the container of honey in the water and let it sit until the honey starts to flow again. You can also microwave the jar of honey for 30 seconds at a time until it's soft, but make sure you remove the metal lid first!
