  • Question
What does "throwing from the stretch" mean?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
It's a pitching term. It means pitching without a windup in order to keep baserunners close to their bases before the pitch is delivered.
  • Question
What's the ideal arm position for a throw?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
In throwing a baseball, use the form most comfortable and effective for you. Some people throw with their arm nearly vertical. Some throw with their arm nearly horizontal ("sidearm"). Most throw with the arm somewhere in between.
  • Question
How do I throw a ball farther, like 70 meters?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
Throwing distance is largely a function of arm and body strength. Weight lifting and other strengthening exercises (up to a point) will help. Also, maximum distance can be achieved by throwing the ball at an angle between 30°and 45° above horizontal. That is true with any kind of ball.
  • Question
Coach says I throw my ball like a grenade, how would I throw it overarm correctly? Is it a problem with my hip movement?
    Community Answer
Apparently your coach is commenting on the alignment of your elbow when you throw. Your elbow should be bent as you throw. In throwing a grenade, your elbow would be kept straight while you throw.
  • Question
How do I wind up my arm before throwing? My dad says to keep it next to my ear.
    T M
    Community Answer
What your dad most likely means by that is to keep your elbows sticking out and your hands by your cheeks. Then, bring your hands outward by using just your elbows. This is not the only way to wind up, though.
  • Question
Does the placement of the ball in a pitcher's hand matter closer to the palm or further away from the palm (out toward the tips of the fingers), does it affect my ability to add more or less rotation?
    T M
    Community Answer
The placement of the ball within your hand does affect the rotation a little bit. Change ups are usually slower, and is held closer to the palm rather than a four seam fastball. It also depends on where the ball leaves from your hand and how much you flick your wrist downward.
  • Question
How do I throw if I only have 4 fingers?
    Community Answer
That's all it takes. The ball is normally thrown with the thumb and three fingers touching it. (You could also learn to throw with the other hand.)
  • Question
My dad says I need to keep my eye on the ball, what does that mean?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
It means watching the ball closely all the way until the moment it hits your bat (or your glove). Doing that can really improve your hitting (or catching).
  • Question
    How do I throw harder?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
Throwing involves arm, shoulder and back muscles. Use them all to give added force to the ball as you let go of it.
  • Question
How do you throw out your arm?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
That just means you put too much strain on your arm. If you will warm up slowly (and massage your arm) before you throw hard, you may be able to avoid that.
  • Question
Which foot do you lead to throw?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
Step forward with your non-dominant leg (the leg opposite your throwing arm).
  • Question
Every time I throw a baseball, my teammates say I throw poorly, how do I fix that?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
Take a big stride forward with your non-dominant leg as you throw. (That's your left leg if you're right-handed.) Throw hard.
