  • Question
Is there a back-strap katana sheath (the one that slings on your back)?
    Community Answer
That's just a bad idea. There may be one for a ninjato, as it is a small straight blade, but if a sword is longer than the length between your wrist and shoulder, then a back-strap scabbard won't work.
  • Question
Do I need self-discipline to use a katana?
    Community Answer
Absolutely, especially when using a live blade like a shinken (sharp katana). Even blunt weapons like the bokken or shinai may cause serious injuries when used in a playful and dangerous manner. Self-discipline is therefore a must, but this will almost certainly be taught at the sword school of whichever art you choose to pursue.
  • Question
Do I need to use the suggested martial art forms, or could I use a different type?
    Community Answer
There is nothing forcing you to use the suggested martial art forms; it is just that these are the easier ones. There are many other types of martial art forms you could use.
  • Question
How can I polish my katana?
    Community Answer
Polishing materials can be very abrasive. If your katana is a wall-hanger it can look the part, but have a low-grade chrome finish that polishing can damage; often they have no tang, or pins that cannot be removed. For a blade you can train with, usually a sword-cleaning kit would contain clove oil, a very fine powder, a sword pin hammer and cloth. If you are using something stronger (I have seen very abrasive mag wheel cleaner used), take the pins from the handle and test tang.
  • Question
How can I get a good katana? What is the average price range?
    Community Answer
If possible, try to get in touch with a practitioner who has some experience with swords, who might be able to help you out when choosing one. Blunt weapons are generally a bit cheaper, and the finish and ornamentation (decorative features) play a big role in price. A good iaito (blunt practice katana) generally costs around $1000 if you want one made with good materials and some decent decorative finish. Once you go into shinken (sharpened blades), prices jump by about $500 - 1000 more. If you want a traditional hand-forged one, however, expect to pay at least $5000.
