    Expert Answer
Familiarize yourself with the equipment and learn about the various parts of the MIG welder, including the wire feeder, welding gun, and gas regulator. It's also important to prepare the workpiece—clean the metal surfaces you're going to weld to ensure good penetration and adhesion. Remove rust, paint, and other contaminants using a wire brush or grinder.
  • Question
Can a gas leak from welding be harmful?
    T. Chinsen
    Top Answerer
Any gas can be inhaled and become harmful if inhaled in sufficient quantities. The gases reduce the oxygen level of the air when they are present. Aspirators absorb toxic gas and stop it from being inhaled into the body.
  • Question
I am replacing the floor pans on a VW. Which welder should I use?
    Community Answer
In general, the GMAW/MIG or Stick will work. If you don't know how to use a MIG welder, then get a skilled MIG welder to teach you how or take a welding class at a local community college. Learning on the fly is not sound or safe. Have your VW pan welding checked out by a skilled welder.
  • Question
    How do I reduce porosity?
    Community Answer
Chances are your shielding gas pressure is too low or too high. Try adjusting your work pressure to 22 to 25 pounds.
  • Question
Which type, TIG or MIG, is commonly used in vehicle assembly?
    Mzm555
    Top Answerer
Both MIG and TIG can be used in vehicle assembly; however, MIG is usually preferred due to its speed, ease of use, and ability to produce long, uninterrupted, high-quality, clean slag-free welds. TIG welding, on the other hand, is equally useful in creating welds on thin metals and tubing, such as automotive exhaust systems.
  • Question
In MIG welding, how much the pressure of the gas should be in it?
    Mzm555
    Top Answerer
With MIG, your regulator should be set to around 25-30 CFH, perhaps a bit more if you are doing horizontal or overhead welds.
  • Question
What is a visual examination test?
    Mzm555
    Top Answerer
A visual examination test (for a weld) is simply that, the weld is looked at by an experienced and/or qualified welder, supervisor, or inspector, for porosity, cold lap, lack of fusion, bead height, undercut, etc. A visual examination on a welding machine on the other hand is just a simple check any welder could do really, checking all cables are in good condition, contact tips, drive rollers, etc are clean and in working condition, etc.
