  • Question
My three month-old puppy refuses to go for a walk. I finally get it going and it runs ahead of me, pulling on the leash, then suddenly halts and won't move. What should I do?

    Community Answer
This is because it is all new to them. Be patient. Get a special training halter, as this could solve your problem.
  • Question
My dog breaks down and doesn't move when we head home. Treats won't help. How do I get them to walk back?
    Community Answer
Try going another route, or try going for a longer walk so that he/she will be tired and want to go home when it's time.
  • Question
My year old dog keeps stopping and refusing to walk during routine walks or runs. Treats don't seem to help. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Try giving her a day or 2 to get some rest. If this doesn't work, you should probably visit a vet just to get some advice and make sure it is nothing serious.
  • Question
My 9 month old puppy keeps on plopping down on walks and hikes. He is healthy according to his veterinarian. We are very patient with her. But she keeps on plopping down studying other dogs or people.
    Community Answer
This is normal, and some breeds tend to be more explorative and curious than others. Let your dog get familiar with the place, sniff what he/she wants and do this every time so after a few times, your puppy will be walking smoothly. Perhaps once in a while, when you are hiking around a new place which you don't go to often, you may tug the leash when your puppy starts to lose focus.
  • Question
I have a very overweight corgie who refuses to go for a walk. Any tips?
    Community Answer
Maybe your dog is just nervous. Try carrying your corgi in your arms while walking around and do this every day. Once you think she/he's ready, try walking your dog on the leash. If the dog is still refusing, try tossing some treats or rewarding your dog after every walk.
  • Question
My year old dog used to love walks when he was a puppy, but now he hates them. We can only reach the end of the street before he yanks me to go home, and not for treats either. He’s very healthy too.
    Community Answer
Make sure that you walk your dog and your dog doesn't walk you. Possibly there's something your dog is afraid of, so try to detect the problem. Otherwise, let your dog get familiar with the place, letting the dog sniff around, and when he/she refuses, tug a little. I recommend using a prong collar during walks or training, it does not hurt the dog but gives a prickling sensation.
  • Question
My dog loves to walk but he is stubborn. When he finds a favorite spot, he runs to get there. I can't control. Otherwise, he follows me but too fast to walk.
    Community Answer
Don't let your dog walk you, remember, you walk your dog. This is normal and can be fixed with a bit of training. On walks, keep the leash about a foot length to your dog so the leash seems shortened. This is so your dog will not run ahead or behind you. If your dog walks to fast, pull the leash and keep doing this on every walk so that your dog keeps the same pace. Avoid your dog's favorite spot for a while so he/she can familiarize with other trails.
  • Question
My dog is so strong and basically takes me for a walk. He is a 5 year old lab, what should I do?
    Community Answer
Consider taking your dog to training classes if possible. I recommend getting a prong collar, it gives a prickling sensation but does not hurt the dog. They are used for training. Don't be afraid to say "no" once your dog begins to pull. Also, keep the leash about 1 foot in length from your hand to your dog so your dog can't run ahead.
  • Question
When I go on walk with him, he keeps going around and running and jumping for people and he is very stubborn. What shall I do?
    Community Answer
Try getting a prong collar, it gives a prickly feeling but does not hurt the dog. They are used for training. If the dog begins running ahead, keep the leash short and about 1 foot in length between your hand and your dog, this strains the activity of the dog. Tug the leash once your dog begins jumping for people and don't be afraid to say "no."
  • Question
My 4 year old golden retriever rescue has a food fetish. If we're out walking and he smells/sees something to eat, he will lunge for it. I literally have to drag him down the street.
    Community Answer
All he needs is a little training. I recommend using a prong collar for training, it does not hurt the dogs but gives a prickling sensation so a little tug will steer her/him away. Whenever this happens, give a tug and don't be afraid to say "no."

This is a jealousy issue; I suggest carrying the dog in the stroller a few walks at a time and eventually it will wean.

My dog is 14 months, he has a negative association with the lead. He can heel by my side without the lead on but as soon as the lead is on he tugs and pulls in every direction, any help?
    Heaven Doute
    Community Answer
Try slowly with it; put it on while feeding him a treat or every time he doesn't tug praise and reward him.
  • Question
Why does my dog dislike walks? She goes down on the ground and won't move. She is a very temperamental dog. What can I do, as she is getting fat with not exercising?
    Heaven Doute
    Community Answer
Some dogs find it boring and unwanted to go on walks. Try using a treat line, they can follow the treats outside and (hopefully) they will start associating treats with the outside and go out more.
  • Question
Our dog pulls us along, which is not a pleasant walk, and he LOVES everyone! How do we keep him close and stop him from being so friendly?

    Community Answer
Don't stop your dog from being friendly, because it might stop being friendly to family members or you. If your dog is pulling a lot, purchase a gentle leader. It isn't a muzzle, it's a head collar. It works like a horse halter. When the dog pulls, the leader controls his head, thereby controlling the body. If the pulling continues, pull him back and say "no." Have him sit, and pull the leash gently. This is called correcting your dog. Do this every time your dog does something you don't like.
