In Undertale, the "great" Papyrus calls his blue attack fabled. Don't get scared, he thinks he is greater than he actually is. If you still worry, there is no need to, because you can follow the steps in this article to easily survive and advance to soul mode blue. Please note that this article is using Papyrus's blue attack as an example, because he is the first character that uses blue attacks in the game. However, you can use these steps to survive any blue attack, whether it be coming from Sans, Mettaton, a laser in Hotland, the Dogi, or any of the many other instances where blue attacks are used.
Steps
-
Understand the soul modes. The basics follow:
- While the soul is red, it is in normal mode and behaves normally. It can move in any direction at a constant speed and can slow down by holding x or shift. This is the generic soul mode, used in fighting random encounters such as those with froggit, moldsmal, and others.
- When blue, the soul is in jump mode and affected by gravity. It's resting position is in the center of the horizontal axis at the bottom of the screen. Use the left and right arrows to move in their corresponding directions and the up arrow to jump. The down arrow does nothing. This soul mode is unique to Papyrus and Sans, although the blue attack is not.
- Whilst green, your soul can not move. It is positioned in the center of the fighting box. There is a circle around the soul in which a spear moves (up, down, left, and right) depending on which arrow key you press. You must move this spear to shield yourself from attacks. This soul mode is used during the Undyne fight.
- While purple, your soul is trapped on three lines that it can move horizontally across and switch between to dodge attacks. This is the web of Muffet, who turned you purple in the first place.
- Lastly, When you are in soul mode yellow your soul is upside down. It can also shoot things similar to Flowey's "friendliness pellets", little bullets with a deadly sting. They are used in soul mode yellow to shoot and destroy the attacks coming at you. This is a soul mode signature to the forms of Mettaton.
-
Use the blue stop signs for blue attacks. Listen to Sans when he tells you that Papyrus is not dangerous and a clue on how to survive the blue attack. Check Sans whenever you see him. He will most likely say a stupid/awesome joke depending on your opinion. However, he sometimes actually has some useful advice. Also, using the blue stop sign trick is universal for all blue attacks, not just for San's brother.
- Be warned, San's information is a bit misleading. He basically says that you will be totally okay if you don't move during the attack, and to imagine a blue stop sign. However, what he doesn't mention is that the blue attack changes your soul mode to blue.

Encounter the monster you are fighting. In the case of Papyrus, this will happen when he tries to capture you.
-
Choose from one of four options. You can do one of the following: act, item, spare, or fight. In the case of Papyrus, doing an action or an attempt to spare Papyrus leads him to use his blue attack on you.
-
Remain completely still during the attack. Doing so means that all of the blue bones will not hurt you. However, it also means that your soul mode will turn blue.
- Know that the attack will not always be bones. During the fight with Asgore, you must stay still when his eyes flash blue and move when they flash orange. In the case of Mettaton, you must dodge under white disco lights and freeze under blue ones. The Greater Dog will send a color changing spear towards you, in which you must let it pass over you when it is blue. These are just a few of the many examples of where a blue attack will show up in battle.
-
Celebrate your success! You survived the blue attack.
- Know that if your fight is one where your soul will turn blue (Sans and Papyrus), it is affected by gravity. You will not have the use of the down arrow. You will mainly have to jump upwards, but as the fight progresses you will need to jump up and to either the left or the right, therefore using two arrows at once.

Tips
- All you really have to do to dodge the attack is stay still. However, the soul mode blue makes it hard for you to dodge anything else. Thanks
- The reason this will not work on the genocide run is because you want to kill everything on the genocide run. Killing is not acting or sparing, so Papyrus will not use his blue attack. Thanks
- The true pacifist route is hard. However, Papyrus is an amazing character and will try to stop Undyne from killing you if you choose to spare him. Thanks
