Coming from a professional jeweler with two master's degrees in metalwork: DON'T use baking soda, toothpaste, corn starch, or anything abrasive directly on your sterling silver if you care about the original shine. Although all these methods are very effective for removing oxidation, you'll never get the original shine back unless you know someone with a buffing wheel. Get something online or try using the aluminum and soda method.
